o2 sensor question

as dumb as this may sound what would happen if I didn't put my o2 sensor back in I mean do I really need it. or is it going to take away from the performance of the vehicle. I kinda stripped the bolt on mine and it won't come off. So if I really need another one I will get one but if I don't I will just plug it.
