I recently had my mechanic install SG36 universal standard Ignition O2 sensors in both sides of my 1990 Q45. Now we are getting a 33 and 53 read out which indicates trouble with both sensors. I chose these sensors because the shop I went to said they would work and also the standard ignition website says they will work also and I paid about $40 each for them vs. $140 ea. from the dealer. Before I do anything else, can someone recommend another option or at least which O2 sensors will work?

I've heard good things about the NGK sensors from these guys. http://www.sparkplugs.com Priced at $100 for the pair. They're showing the same unit for both sides in the "OEM Identical" series, but the ones from Nissan were different from one side to the other, so I'd check with cust. service on that before you order.

If you decide to go OEM check with Joe at Infiniti of Scottsdale at 1-888-468213-5328 or online. The last time I bought them there for about $103 each, but that was in 2001.

Thanks. I tried those guys and the wait was about 2 weeks. I just found out my car has a 11/89 mftr. date on it and the Standard ignition online application guide only goes back to 2/90. I wonder if this matters.

I actually looked into the 02 sensors at sparkplugs.com. The tech guy there assured me they were as good as the factory infiniti 02 sensor, and he promised to email me spec's. He never did, so I returned them to sparkplugs.com (which accepeted the return - no problem) and ordered infiniti 02's from Joe at Scottsdale Infiniti. I also found out the RH and LH 02 sensors have differnt part #'s. What the diff's is I don't know and don't care. They work fine and that's all I care about. Actually, it was worth the extra $100 to go with factory and eliminate one potential problem source. Just my $.02's worth.

Not only "as good as" factory...Same as factory. NGK made the originals. As far as I can tell, the wire type, the sensor, and the connector are identical in both units. Resistance is the same. The difference is that the Infiniti factory sensors have little plastic clips that plug into the car's mounting brackets, and they're located correctly. If I recall, one has 2 clips, and one has 1 clip, and one has a little longer wire than the other. Those are the only differences that I'm aware of.

I replaced the sensors in my 1990 with NGK's from Sparkplugs.com, and had no problems with the job or performance. The harnesses fit perfectly. The ones removed (original I think) were not NGK, though, but JEC. My understanding is that JEC was a joint venture of Nissan and Bosch. Maybe the factory used multiple suppliers- although I think that would have been rare in the pre-Renault days.

According to Joe at Scottsdale, the NGK 02 were built to a lesser spec standard than the infiniti - hence that's why I asked Sparkplugs.com for an email withe the spec's to compare - an email that never arrived. The factory 02's, have a metal guard around the top of the sensor and they differentiate between LH and RH. Other than that, its anyone's guess. Depends on whether you want to assume the NGK's will perform as good and as long as the OEM infiniti. Personal choice.

Thanks,

Stephen
