I read somewhere that the lower heatshields for the turbo had to be removed because they will hit the steering column? Is that true? I know the top heat shield that covers the exhaust manifold stays and the one that protects the motormount stays, but what about the other two? one covers the exhaust housing, and the other bends around the housing close to the o2 extension. I attached a pic of one of the shields I am talking about.

My understanding is it's the one that you can just see in your picture that shares two bolts with the exhaust outlet on the and another couple on the inlet housing. This is the one that I have removed, although I'd like to put it back on by maybe cutting a slot in it to clear the steering. I'll look at that when I get the motor in. Hopefully this weekend.

BTW.. apparently you also need to remove the AIR pipe that goes into the exhaust below the O2 sensor and plug the hole. I'm going to try and kepe this too by making one that routes around the back of the turbo to try and make it look a little more stock for emission testing here in Ontario.

I didn't even bother taking off that heatshield, I had my dad stay under the car while the car was jacked up onto jackstands and look where it was hitting the steering column when I turn the steering wheel and what he did was take off one of the bolts that was holding the heatshield only and "VOILA" no more problems with the steering column. Just do the same when you get it into your car...:D

That's good to know. What engine mounts did you use? My guess i t tat it could still hit when the engine moves (under load), the softer the mounts the more it would move, the more likely it is to hit.

If your swaping and worried about it hitting the steering colum it is my understanding that nismo engine mounts do a pretty good job keeping the engine in place even under very heavy cornering loads.

Agreed, I'd rate them as:

Nismo - stiff - bestSR - medium - OKKA - soft - use if that's all you got.

Heh, well now, I guess I'm in the clear because I actually did get Nismo mounts. We'll put it in with the shields and see how it goes.
