whenever i take my foot off the gas the car has a terrible lag. a BIG one. i was thinking it was maybe my diff since i got the car as a hand me down with 175 k on it, i dont believe the diff fluid was ever change, and i was scared to do it my self due to the amount of corrison it has suffered. the car spent most of its life in toms river nj right by the bay so the car is in bad shape when it comes to metal ( but i am in the process of fixing mwahahaha). but i dont have any other ideas when it comes to the lag. o yeah i forgot anther thing the car makes a droning sound when i take my foot off the gas pwwwwwwease help.

I'd love to help... but you will need to describe the symptoms a little better. It stands to reason that th car would "lag" when you let off the gas... it's supposed to... because... you let off the gas. Try to explain the problem in a little more detail and I'm sure one of us could help you. Also... provide model/year and any possible mods that might influence the problem.

its an 89' 240, not mods its stock for now while i save up for a front clip. i know cars lag when you take your foot off the gas but my car will make your head go fowards almost as if im hitting the brakes. the car slows down almost 5 mph almost immediately. my trans has been slipping alittle lately and i doont believe the diff fluid has ever been change, the owner befor me didnt take good car of the car as you can tell. the car has 179 k on it with an auto transmission. i dont know what else i could mention, thanks for you help.

I'm no expert on 240 transmissions but it could be that your torque converter isn't unlocking as quickly as it should, Does it happen only when cruising at a steady speed and let off of the gas or does it happen even when you were accelerating and then GENTLY let off of the gas. Does your car sputter at all when coming to a complete stop?

Quick check-Do you have your O/D on? I know on my car it will slow you down quick if its not on.

I have almost the same problem with my auto transmission. Its a 92 240sx. i have the problem of the transmission staying in 2nd or 3rd gear at 55-60mph and won't shift to 3rd or 4th. I've played with the overdrive and it doesn't help. When i come to a stop its still stuck in 3rd or 2nd and when a press the gas it bogs down and shifts into 1st after a couple seconds and almost dies. I think the transmission fluid needs to be changed. But, i'm doing an auto to manual transmission swap in a few weeks.

the car does have o/d and i almost always have it on. it happens at any speed really. its less noticable at higher speeds like 65-70 i think because the car has so much momentum. i changed the transmission fluid about 5 k ago so that shouldnt be it. my trans also down shifts when i stop like you were saying. umm o yeah! the car sometimes stumbles but only when i come to hard stops and let of the gas, i thuoght it was a dirty throttle body like someone mentioned on anther thread, i was going to check it out but then the billzard came and ruined that idea..

One way you can test if the torque converter is unlocking quickly enough is to unplug the wire that controls when the Torque converter locks up. I don't know where it is on 240s but on Olds Cutlass Cieras (Dad's old car, not mine ever) it was right on the front of the transmission. If you unplug this and then stop suddenly it shouldn't have any sputtering problems at all. It also will run the engine at a higher RPM at highway speeds, because the transmission will still be slipping.Let us know if this helps

yeah i put new fluid and filter, gen nissan filter too. i think that after the snow goes and i have some kinda decent work spot ( i have to dig out my entire drive to pull into my garage) ima see if the throttle body is clogged up, and if that doesnt work ill try unplugging it. its not bad though i dont know if it would be worth replace or disconnecting things just because it doesnt happen that often and by end of summer i wanna have my silvia conversion and an lsd but ill let you guys know how it went thanks a bunch!
