I'm at my wits end trying to get this car to pass emissions. I need %1.2 or less Co2 and less than 220 PPM hydrocarbons to pass here in Utah County. so far my hydrocarbons are around 250-270 and my CO2 is at 1.3% in the 2500 highspeed test. JDM SR20DE block and head with USDM components. I'm missing the AIV valve but the rest of the US components are there.

New OEM O2 sensor, cap, rotor, wires, iridium plugs, SS auto header, stock cat and exhaust.

Any tricks or secrets to reduce the hydrocarbons on the SR20DE? If i can tweak it to pass myself before i go in tomorrow i can save $60 an hour of them trying to get it to pass.

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys might have!

my ignition timing is doing wierd things. I set it to 16-17 btc and it runs slow as a dog, like its tripping the knock sensor or something. I set it to about 13-14 btc and it runs faster. with timing marks around 8 btc it runs even faster. I'm questioning my Chiltons manual saying its 20, 15, 10, 5, 0, 5 across the timing marks, left to right.

I did all the timing procedures..is there anything i'm blatantly missing here?

maybe the mechanical timing is off,cam jumped a tooth? that still doesnt explain the excess fuel though. maybe a poor ground on the air flow meter? or an out of spec coolant temp sensor? your car is the same as a sentra ser.

I think my chiltons is wrong, or maybe its timing mark explanation doesnt apply to the SR20DE. i have it timed one mark from the right (clockwise) and its a lot more powerful and has better throttle response. I guess i'l just have to see how it emits tomorrow.

There should be a colored mark on the pulley [yellow or orange] that mark is top dead center.

I read in another thread how they used denatured alchohol (from home depot I believe) in a quarter tank of gas and 2 people in that thread passed that had close to the same readings as you. They also changed the timing. DO a search for emissions you should find the thread.

It looks like the Chilton manual is wrong. If the ignition timing was retarded by that large amount when you went for inspection, it'll screw up the emissions. Here's a picture of the timing marks on a KA24 pulley which should be the same as on the SR20:
