So yeah, I reinstalled my alternator after a rebuild and apparently I didn't tighten the nut on the back of the alternator bolt that goes through the block and it fell off. Its that funny looking nut with the ear on it. So now my alt is rattling like a mofo. If I were a betting man, I would say its an M12x1.25 but I'd rather get some verification.

The answer is in...

M10 x 1.25 fine threaded.

That was my second guess. And now the answer will be here for others who newb it up and forget to tighten theirs and lose it.

Yup the reason why I asked what size socket is because its usually 4 sizes smaller. Like just 14mm socket would make it M10x? and with 10mm socket would make it M6x? just some food for though.

2004 Nissan Xterra, 2.4L, MT, 2WD.

So, the bolt for the alternator fell out.

I would guess from above the bolt (08174-0071A) is an M10 x 1.25 x unknown

The alternator measures 4.75" in length at the bracket where the bolt goes through.

Anyone know the length of this bolt?

Dunno, but it's $4.32 list from the dealer, p/n 11916-4P100. It's also a good p/n/ for Nissan (R50 Pathy and 350Z), so you're not stuck with just an Infiniti dealer.

How do you find the part number for that? I can't find that online.

Thank you for that by the way?

I'll get one on order, along with the proper accouterments.

I just checked with the Nissan site and it shows that 11916-4P100 does not fit a 2004 Xterra 2.4L with MT?

InfinitiPartsDeal is fabulous, they're a consortium of Infiniti dealers with OE database and drawings. If you plug in your VIN it will tell you exactly what parts your ride was built with. Lots of Infiniti parts interchange with Nissan, and you can use NissanPartsDeal to find that out when necessary. Indispensable!

Yep, not working. Shows the VIN is not currently readable. I did find it at Nissan Parts Deal so I'm good.

Thanks!

You're most welcome. That's odd, sometimes the old stuff misfires on VIN's but '99 isn't all that old. :gotme

Ahh, I see what is going on with the part numbers now!

This is for a 2004 Xterra. The 1999 QX4 was totaled (my daughter was hurt, but is fine now) and she got the Xterra to replace the QX4.

The Xterra is nice, but has more than a few small issues that are keeping me busy. This is only one of the bunch!

I updated "my car" so it reflects the right info.

Yeah, Oldie but goodie! Purchasing a 2004 vehicle and getting good info is a challenge, but NCIO is up to the fight!

As a side note, I have found that apparently two different bolt assemblies were used. Both bolt versions are the same length though. I found three different Xterras in the U Pull It (UPI) and I bought all three bolts. Turns out one was a non-Nissan part, and the other two were Nissan parts. One had a standard nut on the end, and the other had the "anti-rotate" tab welded on the nut. I used the nut with the tab.

I think the torque rating in the FSM is too high for this bolt at around 35 ft/lbs. It almost felt like it was going to strip so I stopped at 25 ft/lbs. I'm going to UPI tomorrow and I'll check a few more, but I'm feeling good about this fix.

Thank you for the assistance!

Happy we could help! The "nut with a welded tab" is a VERY common Nissan thing for the alternator. I'll bet that's the right one. I've never tried to torque that to a value, just till it felt right.I've never had one come loose, so I'm sure you'll be fine.

Do you have a VG or a KA? Only the KA has 35 lbs/ft, on the VG it's about 19 lbs/ft. See SC-35:

I just didn't like the way the bolt felt as I torqued it past 25 ft/lbs, so I stopped there. It sure seems tight enough, that's for sure.
