Hey guys, I am sort new to this site, tho i use it alot. I am however new to Nissans.
So the good stuff. I bought a 1999 QX4 with RE4R01A transmission with no reverse gear. So I completely rebuilt the transmission, had to replace the sun gear and planetary set and remove the hand fulls of metal. Replaced the steels/frictions, all seals, blah and blah. I tested the solenoids and temp sensor and every test passed that the manual told me to test and new TC of course. Installed the transmission and has been driving great for 1000 miles till last night. Which was also the first time a got it to highway speeds......and i am using the original cooler.

So heres the list, With engine on.
Fluid level is good, but fluid smells burnt, but color isnt black yet just dark red.(engine was off to check level).
Starts only in neutral but it has been doing that from day one since i have had it probably neutral safety switch.
When engine is on and put into reverse it does nothing till i get to like 2k RPM, but seems to be hesitant to move and clucks into gear.
In drive it seems to slip i am guessing, and takes more gas pedal to move and slower acceleration.
When shifter in second gear, seems normal.........
When shift is in first gear it does nothing till i get to like 2k RPM, but seems to be hesitant(like the reverse).

Now with engine off.
I can shift through the gears I hear the solenoids function when moved into reverse and drive.
Did the transmission self diagnonis and said nothing was wrong with any of the circuits the light flickered evenly.
When i shift into neutral with engine off, it seems to be in park still it wont roll at all. But the lever is clearly in neutral. This has me worried something is jammed/binding.
Ran codes and had PO0732, which is helpful but not.......''2 gear incorrect''

The transmission book is giving me ideas.....like line pressure solenoid, leak around the low and reverse brake circuit(inside transmission), low/reverse brake band, line pressure.

So a few questions,
How do i adjust/check the only adjustable band on the transmission? That band seems to effect the low and reverse clutches.
Where is the A/T control module? I want to check the resistance of the solenoids w/o removing the pan. I have a schematic to show what i need to pin but i don't know the location of it.

Any input on any of this would be nice i am stressing hardcore cause I just sold my spare truck. Thanks so much!!!

Ok found the A/T control module on this year and such, its left of the steering column under dash, pretty easy to get to.

Dropped the pan as well, for being freshly rebuild it has very light film of black sludge and dark red fluid, the magnet has fuzz on it to. And is burnt in smell for sure. No obvious damage...yet.

Sorry, I don't have any recommendations for your big problems, but I have some food for thought. I have next to no experience with transmissions :frown:

The dark fluid and fuzz maybe leftovers from other parts of the system that didn't get cleaned, like the cooler. Regardless, I'd recommend installing a Magnefine filter as described in the General Info thread to help protect your work and pull the nasty crud out of the fluid.

That's a good idea, the transmission pan however has a donut size magnet at the bottom.....figure that would catch it all.....maybe not.

I called around for used ones with a year warranty, 850-1000 including shipping. I would remove and replace myself. And make sure to put a trans cooler on to.....i think all my problems started with it over temp-ing. Called some repair stations as well, with the code PO732 with there experience they 99% of the time that's internal, because it is recognizing a slip with higher engine RPM or something along those lines.....none the less i have to remove it.....

Well, removed the transmission two days ago. Just disassembled passed the reverse drum. Here are my findings, Reverse band is toast!!!!! Solid Black with chucks missing, and in some places wore straight to the metal. So that was the burnt smell and the black film in the bottom of the pan. It got so hot it damaged my forward part of the shell. And the clutch assy. clutches are lightly burnt. Ordered all my parts to fix this problem. I will keep you guys updated. I am going to ask this again, hoping someone know, WHAT is the Proper way to set/adjust the band? clearly I didn't set it right the first time. And it caused all these issues. The manual is Very vague.
