Hello,

Just 2 quick questions...

Oil return line to pan - Any suggestions on what to use to make the hole in the pan. Is there welding needed?

Downpipe comes unassembled - Does this mean it needs to be bolted together or welded?

Well, taking the oil pan off and using a drill bit of the appropriate size would be a good start :)

And as far as the downpipe, if there are holes for bolts and it comes with hardware youll most likely bolt it together, as far as welding it, it might not be a bad idea but might make it hard to take out or put in.

The downpipe must be welded to your fav exhaust.... I had my apexi n1 dual cut off after the cat and a new pipe all the way to the downpipe welded for $100, 3 inch... its nice. veddy nice.

The fitting on the oil pan doesn't have to be welded. Just use a drill bit that is slightly smaller then the fitting. Thread in the fitting then use a little JB Weld around the outside of the fitting.

Removing the oil pan is the best method. Some companys say drill the hole and then change the oil and that is suposed to get rid of the metal filings. I personally would never take such a risk.

Another thing to consider is cutting some heat expansion reliefs on the exhaust manifold to prevent cracking.

Use as much Thermotech wrap as you can afford, I mean on everything from the down pipe to the intake piping.

WD: Does that exhaust wrap stuff really make that much of a difference? And is it worth what it costs?

the exhaust wrap is worth it. Befdire I put it on my down pipe I was melting my brake fluid resivoir until it was nothing but a pile of metled plastic. I wrapped my down pipe and got a new resivoir and it is not getting very hot any more.

about the oil pan i reccomned welding. I cut a hole in mine and welded the bung in place. Drilling a hole is not that big of a deal. If you remove the pan and drill it out and after you done clean it well you will not have to worry about metal shavings .

Lowering your underhood temps will generate hp and torque all by itself. Especially if your using a pod filter without a cold air partition.

WD, where/how do you cut the heat expansion reliefs? I don't question your authority on this subject or anything, but won't that compromise the integrity of the manifold? I'm sure it won't, otherwise you wouldn't recommend doing it, but can you explain how it is done?

first off if you don't weld the oil bung on your a freekin idiot and don't deserve to drive a SOHC 1.6 Honduh. The hour and a half of work to get the oil pan off and welded isn't worth risking a $500+ motor on a $5 tube of 'rigging compound'. And the steel in the pan really isn't thick enough to successfully drill and tap it (IMHO).

Also the downpipe isn't a full downpipe, it goes down from the turbo and ends right about where the steering knuckle is. You have to fab up a downpipe to connect that to the rest of the exhaust (which is no big deal as long as you don't mind driving to the muffler shop with an open exhaust)

and as far as cutting the manifold, it's a great idea. He's talking about cutting the flange's appart so insted of 1 flange that goes all the way accross you have 4 seprate ones that are free to heat up and expand or contract as they wish insted of being tied together where they would heat up at different rates and crack.

Heat wrap is excellent and well worth its weight in gold. almost everything i did was heat wrapped. It makes quite a difference!!

You should also drill out the holes for the studs on the manifold. If the holes are snug to the stud, it may sheer off the stud as it expands. Typically the holes should be larger the further from the center of the manifold you get.

no recomendations really, they are the same for the most part as far as their effectiveness. I just went down to the local performance shop and bought some for around $30 a roll. The wider the wrap is, the easier it is to put on.
