Hi,

I made an oil cooler kit and put it on my engine. Everything seemed fine until I accelerated hard. I heard a noise, but my car's old and makes a lot of noises. Anyway, I could feel the engine slow down as I was accelerating. I kept driving at about 4,000 RPM and something was definitely not right. I noticed I had no oil pressure, so I coasted down the hill I was on.

I wasn't in the best place to stop, so I tried to see if I could limp the car home. It would run but stall on idle, so I kept turning it off and coasting and then starting it again. I tried this for about half a mile before I figured that I had to stop. I walked to a gas station, bought oil and filled the block. Started the engine and it idled but it sounded dry and had no oil pressure. I waited a minute and no change, so I turned it off. About this time I noticed a huge oil puddle under the car. The f-ing adaptor plate had popped off the block! You could feel pieces of stripped threads on the bolt where the adaptor was supposed to be.

I think this happened because I overtightened the adaptor plate. The adaptor plate is aluminum. What are the threads on the bolt where the oil filter attaches made of? It was dark so I couldn't check if the bolt on the block stripped or if it was the adaptor plate. I really hope it was the adaptor plate, since that's only about $15.

Reading this, do you think I just screwed my engine up? What do you guys think I should do?

Thanks,

Darian

PS The oil cooler solved my heating issue, not that that matters much now.

Check your oil pan for pieces of metal lol.... Do a compression check too, that should let you know if you did some big damage.

no can cause lots of issues...... do what the boys above suggested...... as well as I would be checking the turbo as it was oil starved too.

hopefully you caught it early enough........ though Im not sure "early enough" is too much better than the alternative.

let us know how it goes. post some pics too

ouch man....

I killed three turbos before I tracked down a piece of RTV in the oil feed banjo for the turbo.

Guy who I paid to rebuild my SR phucted me hard and didn't use any factory gaskets and did a horrible job.

That's why now, as opposed to 4 years ago, I build everything I drive.

ANYWAY back to the point. Two of the T25's I roasted died in less than 1/8-1/4 mile. At the MINIMUM your turbo is probably bad. You just can't spin them without oil, they weren't designed for that obviously.

Your rob bearings probably took a beating too. Your head may be ok, but the bottom end is most likely where the most damage was done. Drain what little oil you have left, or fill it, run it for 30 seconds, and then drain it.

If it looks like glitter, you've got big problems.

Thanks everyone,

This doesn't look good. The only good news is it looks like the adapter stripped and not the block. At first the oil in the pan looked fine. If I looked really closely I could see some metal flecks in it, but the pan was dirty before so that might have been why. I just looked at it again and there is a little glitter in it.

Hopefully someone can learn from my expensive mistake. DON'T OVERTIGHTEN THESE ALUMINUM ADAPTERS!!! Pretty obvious in hindsight, but that doesn't help me now.

Anyway, as requested, here are some pictures.

Stripped adapter.

Engine block.

Engine oil.

This really sucks as I really can't afford to fix it right now.

Thanks everyone for the info.

I know its to little to late, but as soon as you see 0 psi you stop and shut off. Don't wait for a good spot. Every second you have 0 psi oil pressure, you're fuxching stuff up.

Sounds like its time for a new turbo and bearings if not a crank...

Yeah, I know. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before so I was pretty stupid. Same thing goes for overtightening the adapter. I should have revved it up for a while while idling.

I'm so bummed about this I can't even begin to explain.

Is that a clear nylon hose with oil going through it?

Yes, it's for the oil pressure gauge.

Correction, my oil and water temperature gauges are the original dual Jaeger gauge. It's almost 50 years old.

But my other gauges are TPI.
