I bought an OEM knock sensor on line from California. It shipped Friday and arrived yesterday. (much to my surprise) Last night I picked up an M10 4" bolt, electric lubricant, and washers at Home Depot. Hopefully, I'm all set. The bolt is a 1.5 and looks a little stout for the job. They come in 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5, but 1.5 was all they had. The sub harness will be picked up today at the Infiniti dealership.

My question is, where exactly do I place the new ks? I realize I have to remove the engine cover to do it. I've seen 2 bolts just under the back end of the cover which looks like the spot. However, it appears that they are both holding down a bracket to the block. Is this where it goes, or does it have to be directly bolted to the block.

Hey there that is a pretty large job the upper and lower plenum need to be romoved to gauin access to the valley where the sensor is located.

Here is a thread that should give you some information on it. If you have any more questions we are more than happy to help.

I'm doing a relocation, not an original replacement. So I'd like to know where, on the top of the block, does the ks go.

I can barely run an ATM, let alone remove any plenums!

Steve ,I believe he's going to relocate to avoid pulling the plenums.

Do a search here and you will see a few places peeps have mounted them.Obviously not as good as down in the valley but better than nothing.

Exactly!

When I pull the engine cover, there are 2 bolts that sit side by side at the top rear of the block. It looks like they are used to hold down a bracket. Can I locate the ks on top of this bracket and get good results, or does it have to sit directly on the block?

Ahh I see what you are talking about now. Interesting fix very creative.

I would definitly say to mount it to the block so it will do something and not detect component vibrations that may occur on whatever metal piece you have found.

I've already printed out that link, thanks to your efforts. But it looks like the bolts in the same spot on the J30 are used to secure a bracket to the block. Is it okay to place the ks on top of a bracket that sits directly on the block, or should I bolt it directly to the block if possible?

I would think sitting flush against the block is the best way to go. But if it has to sit on top of that bracket, then that's what I'll do.

If possible, be as detailed as you can about where to place it. I'm not all that bright!

I pulled the engine cover last night and took a peek. The ideal place to attach the new ks is on the driver's side towards the back of the engine. However, that bolt also secures the bracket that supports the transverse tubing, (for lack of a better term) so it won't bolt directly to the block.

In front of those bolts, there are two bolts that sit side by side, directly on the block. I think those are the ones, but it doesn't look like there is enough of the block underneath the bolts to cover the entire bottom of the ks, which may not be good enough for an accurate readout by the ecu.

Another spot that looked very promising is just under the left hand throttle cable, toward the front of the engine. There is a bolt that sits directly on the block, with enough of a base under it to fit the entire ks. Unfortunately, it may be too far away from the ks ecu connection. If the harness is long enough to reach, this may be the spot.

According to the experts, where is the best place to relocate?

I'm no expert, but I figure the ECM pretty much just needs to know that a working KS is electrically connected to it. A working KS is good to have, but you never actually want to put it to the test and obviously other things are affected if the correct KS input to the ECM is missing.

I haven't ever heard any one report that their KS was triggered, changing the engine timing, thereby preventing pre-ignition/detonation/knocking and saving their engine, when they were running low-octane fuel, using spark plugs that were too hot and/or pulling a heavy load up a steep grade.
