Now what...bent valve?

Ok well my timing had jumped so I replaced the timing chain and got everything back into time,put it all back together and now I got it to run but it runs real ruff and it won't hold idle and there is smoke that is coming from the valve cover,through the breather and out the air intake.A guy down at the auto part store says it sounds like a bent valve and I know it is an interface engine but I just want to make sure that it is a good possibility of it before I rip the head off.Also it has a real hard time starting and I have had to cover the air intake hose with my hand while somebody else cranks to get it to go.

Also forgot to say the auto part store was out of compression testers so they have one on order so I can't do that right now.

I'd wait until you can test the compression to give anything concrete.

are you sure your chain and ignition timing is exact?
