Decided it's time I hang up the guitar after years of trying and failing to start any meaning band projects. I also hung up my bass for a while for the same reasons. I just get a bad taste in my mouth when I pick them up these days. So today I purchased a drum kit from a co-worker. She doesn't play anymore and thought it was great that I wanted to learn how to play a bit. She sold me her older Mapex Venus Platinum series kit with all the hardware. Good beginner kit and that's perfect for me. The kit looks cool and sounds alright enough for me to learn, still getting it set up so I am comfortable. Got a great price on it too! Thinking it's time for lessons.

I need to get back to playing. I'm no good, but I really enjoyed it back in the day.

professional lessons FTW. My son took them for several years and it's been great.
Fun hearing him jam with his friends in our basement or watching him perform with his school's jazz ensemble. The only thing I recommend is to be considerate of your surroundings as your neighbors may not be as enthusiastic about your playing as you are.

The combination of tolerant neighbors and thick walls in our house made the noise a non-issue for me.

Roland V-Drums are nice, but I recommend Yamaha over Roland simply because it's a bit more bang for the buck. Having played both, the Yamahas are a bit more rugged and durable, and they also use recorded drum samples as opposed to synthesized drum sounds that make up the majority of Roland's drum catalog.

I'm in a townhome myself, and sadly, all I have is my 10pc Yamaha Oak Custom (Oak is Japanese for LOUD MF-ING WOOD), so I do not play at home at all - just in my band's garage across town.

If I ever do get around to it, it would be an entry level or used set for sure. I have spent way too much money on DJ equipment that no longer gets use that if the same were to happen with the V Drums I wouldnt be able to justify the purchase in the first place. Id have to be very serious about it, and at the moment photography is taking up a big chunk of my free time.

Subsequently, the drummer from the band I used to DJ with has a few sets both V and standard so I could probably get something from him on the cheap. NICO band in the making???

I had bought a Rockwood drumset for my son, with mostly zildgien cymbols, some extra doodads and a cowbell, of course. Afterall, you can't have enough cowbell. Pretty elaborate setup. I know pretty much zip about drums so I don't how good Rockwoods are but they seem to have a nice sound and they've held up well to a lot of use.

If you pause at some point during this video, you can see my setup. I would love a set of electronics for my house, but I have around $10K in my stuff for this band - if I quit gigging then I will sell it off and replace it with a Yamaha DTX-something.
