I own a very well maintained 2001 pathy with 185k miles. I know from reading forums here many different reasons for P1140 including dirt build up, solenoid or sensor. One craigslist mechanic with his own shop quoted me $237 parts and labor to replace VVT solenoid and $75 diagnostic fee if I wanted that too. Not sure what hed want for sensor. Some other person quoted 60 + parts.

Now SES light came on AFTER i had advance auto tighten up a lose batter connector from a new battery installation the previous day. Related?

So not sure what to do. :gotme

Oh the engine does not behave any differently than before. Idle is smooth, no RPM play or funny gas consumption.

I am mechanically challenged and do not trust myself to do any of this myself. A friend said to reset code and see what happens due to lack of symptoms.

When I picked up my pathfinder back in February it had a Variable Valve Timing Solenoid code as well... I tried cleaning it and resetting the ECM many times to no avail...

A couple of months ago I swapped in another engine because of blown head gaskets (and coolant blockages in the block) and decided to also replace the VVTS to clear out the code... After replacing it the code came back... After a lot of tinkering and swapping of sensors from old and newer engine I determined that it was the crank positioning sensor on the front of the engine... After swapping that one the code never came back...

So needless to say it may not be the VVTS that is the issue...

Faulty Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve Bank 1
Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve Bank 1 harness is open or shorted

Is it easier to install than vvts? How long does it take to swap each?

They are all about the same difficulty but keep in mind these trucks have 2 crankshaft positioning sensors and 3 camshaft sensors...
The crankshaft sensor you have linked is the one I had swapped... It is located on the bottom front center of the engine...

Scroll down in this thread for pictures I posted of the locations of all the camshaft and crank sensors:

Great thank you. Im about to order the parts from Rockauto. Just so I am clear on this, will you please confirm these two parts are ones associated with the P1140 code on the pathy:

AIRTEX/WELLS 5S1787
GATES VVS115

Thanks a lot!

Yeah they look like they are for the 2001-2004 VQ35DE engine

Also, if i wanted to order the CAMSHAFT position sensors, which two should i get? I understand there is one associate with p1140 and one with p1145? Rockauto list these ones:

intake, exhaust, 2 pin, 3 pin, front, rear.

http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/niss ... ensor,7192

I just think i should buy them all and keep as spare parts for future use if all not needed. Thanks!

Normally you would replace all 3 at the same time... You could buy all 3 and replace them one at a time to see if one is bad... Replace one, clear the codes and start it up... If the code comes back then it is likely that sensor was good, if it doesn't then that sensor was likely bad...
That will give you an idea of which ones you could save for spares...

When I finished my engine swap I pulled all the crank and cam sensors from the old engine for spares as well as all the O2 sensors and vacuum switches...

There are 3 cam sensors... Should be 2 Intake and 1 exhaust... What distinguishes them is the way the connector is clocked... All 3 have a different angle to the electrical connection...

Ahhh ok. Yes those pictures are very helpful.

The bottom one on first pic is exhaust and the two other ones are interchangeable intake ones?

it was a bad sensor. Replaced bank 1 (passenger side) camshaft position sensor and no more SES light since and its been almost two weeks. Before I replaced the part, I reset the SES and it came back within 2 days.
