I work EMS in my town and yesterday my partner tells me about two of her dad's workers who bought new bikes and were out for a ride with 8 others to Simi Valley. One guy hit a rock, lost control and swerved in front of an oncoming car which then swerved and took out both the guys on the new bikes, they were father and son. The father lost his leg at the scene and the son had major head injuries, this was..friday? Found out today that the son died due to massive head injuries and the father is still in intensive care, now with only one leg.
Another horror story I can share from last summer was a young kid showing off for his family was doing a wheelie down a city street at over 100 mph when a car pulled out in front of him. I won't get into the details to much but he was dead at the scene and had hit the car hard enough to spin it more than 180 degrees.....in front of his family no less.
In the 10+ years that I have worked on an ambulance the smartest thing I can tell you is to wear leather and a helmet. Statistics prove that 95% of all accidents happen within 5 miles from home. This is mainly because people know their neighborhood streets, they are just running a quick errand and don't think they need all their safety gear. Please people...just be safe. We don't call those things Donor Cycles for nothing.
