So my car ran out of gas and I put some in. Now I'll turn the key and it'll take forever to start & when it does it sounds really quiet like a lawnmower & dies. It won't rev either when I give it gas. What could be wrong?

I was told the fuel pump was new when the engine was rebuilt. Do you think it could be anything spark plug or injector wise? I'll check the filter.

When you run the car out of gas, that is never a good thing. Fuel keeps the pump cool, the other issue is junk being picked up from the bottom of the tank causing the filter to clog.

Is there anyway to check a fuel filter? I was told to clean my maf. Should I go ahead and replace the plugs or just skip it? It turns over and sparks but dies so it wouldn't be the plugs

Just replace the filter....simple and easy.

Sounds like a fuel issue so changing the spark plugs probably won't help much. Change the fuel filter and put some fresh gas in it (at least half a tank). If you've been cranking it for a while it could also be flooded, so try taking the spark plugs out, removing the IGN fuse and cranking it to blow any fuel out of the cylinder. Then reinstall everything and see what happens. If it still doesn't run, you'll need to check the fuel pressure after the pump. You can rent a gauge at any auto parts store and then just T into the fuel line coming out of the filter. When you turn the key to ON, the fuel pump should prime and it should read 40-45 psi. If not, your pump is probably bad

I did all that. Either the fuel pump relay is bad, wiring to pump is bad or the pump is bad. I'm going to test it tomorrow.

Did you already check fuel pressure after the filter?

It gets none I pulled off the hose and cranked it & not even a drop came out. Could the fuel controller unit have fried?

That would be my guess or the relay or fuse is blown.

Check the fuel pump fuse first by the battery (furthest fuse on the right):

If it isn't blown, you can pick up a used FP control module for pretty cheap. You can check the fuel pump itself before getting a new one by taking it out and applying 12V directly to it. If it runs then you know its good and something else is causing the problem.
