We have a 1996 Neon SOHC that has been making a funky rubbing noise. I narrowed it down to the a/c compressor because the noise only occurs when the a/c is activated. I jacked the car up and had my friend give it some gas. Under throttle the ac clutch locks and the rubbing noise starts. When the revs drop the noise goes away and the ac clutch goes back to spinning.

My though was the a/c clutch locked up while engaged and the noise was the pulley turning on the seized clutch, but a friend suggested that the compressor itselof may be locked up. Which of these sounds like a more likely scenario?

Its a Chrysler product!!! Thats the cause.

for this particular problem it is likely the clutch on the compressor has worn out. but it could be the compressor as he stated. How fast does it go from spinning to a complete stop. If it gradually slows down to a stop I would say clutch. If it abruptly stops and has a hurendous screeching noise then that would be the compressor locking up.
