what do you expect from a say '86 corolla? 600 hp? There is a huge aftermarket for the AG engines, it's just mainly in japan. I personally think the cars are awesome looking and they are just cult cars in japan. They are really easy to drift so that's what they use them for.

they are harder to drift than an s13 and the ae86 GTS only has 115 HP to the flywheel. But those cars are light so... I take one for free to play in the rain with.

I love old Corollas, the style before the AE86, with the 1.8 liter, thats my favorite, like 82 or so...

The AG engines are awesome, tons of parts available, and some stuff is interchangable. They have a production 20v head that is just too hot. I think they look great.

1. I'd buy one.2. Just as big an aftermarket than the SR.3. Easier to drift than a 240.4. Sleeper5. Old school

I'd buy one if they weren't so damn ugly. If more people knew what it was I'd take it as my "beater." But instead people just see a beat to hell 80s toyota, and thats not cool. : )

Well Thats why I would buy the car its so ugly you got to love it. but major draw back is lack of power. it really takes a lot of work to get any power out of it. And its now eaiser to drift...??? a guy on thier site said that the "advantage" of the AE is that it is harder to drift so... it forces you to learn. Its got to be hard to drift with such gutless power. It does have a weight advantage though. I think these cars are getting more hype than they deserve. but to each thier own! And I respect originality and all the hard work that goes into those cars. just doesnt seem to make sense financially. Id rather buy an s13.

another thing: See I would hate to put a battle scar on an s13 but on an old 86 i wouldnt care. the car is so damn ugly it doesnt matter. so that the only thing that makes the corola tempting

it doesnt take power to make a good drifter...all that boils down to is skill and practice (duh). but from what ive read about the legendary drifters in japan they all recommend an 86 to start on because they dont have a lot of power to throw around and they are like the easiest car to control, so they make great starters. how have you been able to get ahold of one? ive been looking for sooo long, but i guess im prolly not looking in the right spots.

Well the corola that I am looking at is a 1982 I think its an AE80??? so its not the 86. still a good drift car just even more underpowered than the ae86 gts.............. but it does look better than the 86

I thought the AE86 had like 140hp to the flywheel and a close-ratio gear box. they also had a lsd and 50/50 weight distribution. the engine is a high revving, well breathing 4banger. the head has an old school variable valve timing system that is still good compared to cars out now. they are good drift cars and i think they look good. what i wouldnt do for a white and black Trueno Apex with a group B engine...

ah yes the treuno/levin ....yup they are good drift cars. if you get one you really do want an AE-86 (Hachi-roku) unless your willing to do all the work to make an 85 comparable. they are becoming very hard to find nowadays.

upgrades are cheap and easy....many choices for your motor swap depending on what your needs are. the most populaur be the high-comp motor swap. maybe $400-$800 for the motor, do the work yourself...easy.

the hardest thing about them is parts more for looks, aero-kits, that kind of stuff. and nice looking wheels hard to find and expensive. go to http://www.club4ag.com very nice site with lots of info. here's one of our trueno's RIP

actually we are considering a KA24DE swap into this one...but probably too heavy......so considering the SR20DET swap for it, a populaur swap in japan....i think the high comp motor is plenty....or maybe the AE111(?) 20-valve. anyways they are really fun cars. oh and by the ways SWIFTDRIFT we found this one in seattle.....oh one other thing most people believe the coupe is much better for drifting than the hatch...but i think the hatch looks a lot better.

From what people have told me, and what i have read at alot of japanese drift sites, is that the ae-86 corollas were mostly popular b/c given enough power, they were easy to initiate a drift, and b/c of their stable suspension, very easy to maintain one. The power part isn't really a factor in japan due to those steep *** mountain roads, that some crazy *** civil engineer designed... Very cool cars, I would have gotten one if I could find one...
