a couple weeks ago my house got hit by lightning , just as i realized my computer was still on and was shutting it down, and it sparked and popped and the electricity went out....later that night, after the storm was over , i went to get back on the computer and the internet wasnt working, it kept saying 'page cannot be displayed' every link i tried(i have adelphia cable internet btw). so we called them(adelphia) and i messed with the computer while on the phone with them, going through all theyre procedures and what not, eventualy they figured out that i needed the ethernet cd to reinstall the ethernet card.

so we went to the adelphia place and got one, got home tried to put it in and when i put the cd in the cd rom and closed it, it didnt do anything?? so i put in another disc in the cd rom, a game disc, and it still didnt do anything, also the green light wasnt coming on the cd rom but it opened and closed fine? so im guessing i need a new cd rom and all will be good, im hoping so anyways... i dont know exactly what all could go wrong from the electricity hitting it?

my sr20 came in btw, sitting on my porch right now:) , i have some questions about that too as far as what all i was susposed to get with the engine package....as soon as i get some pics that is, im on a friends comp right now so ill try to get back on tomorw with pics and look at the replies

A)your CDRom is blown or B)Your power supply is blown (I won't even go into the issues you could have with your motherboard...). I wish I could go check it out for myself...but I live kinda far away bro. I would say just take it to a local computer shop and have them look at it for you.

I doubt the network card fried. The cable "MODEM" would get shot first as it is directly on the line. Also, if it was the NIC being fried [99.9999% of the time--who knows, there _could_ be an exception] you'd see an error in your Device Manager.

As for the powersupply, the CD-ROM drive clearly gets power and the computer boots [almost] fine, so I doubt that (although it could be--however strange--just one of the feeds to the CD...). The question is, is it (the CD-ROM) detected by the BIOS upon boot? If not, look no further and suspect the drive and/or the IDE controller.

If you're running Windows 98 (maybe even Me--not sure), sometimes, in weird cases, the CD driver just decides to stop working... very puzzling.

CD-ROM drives on the other hand... I wouldn't be surprised if that was dead "just because". Most I've used last for about 6 months of good useage (and alot of moving ;-) before they [silently] die with no [good] reason...

Of course, it could be something completely different :-)You should get a good surge protector setup (one that supports power/cable/phone/etc) and, if you live in a [lightning] storm-frequented area a UPS would be another good piece of equipment.

Summary: take it to a shop. Refuse to pay (make sure you have your computer fist <grin>) if they can't tell you exactly what the problem is.>> Not much makes me more mad than people charging money for _NOT_ finding the problem. <<

yes exactly. And cable shouldn't surge like that considering the lines are underground. Otherwise don't you think the UPS would have a plug for the cable line? Again I think it was another classic case of a power surge that w/no surge protector to stop it.

And nissanrcer umm...ha I'll let you know how the mirror install goes when I finally get them in my car. For some reason I've just been too damn lazy to put them in;).
