In the past I found several times great help for a project that was just much easier after seeing someone doing it or just talking about it on the internet ! That is where forums or you tube come in . I never contributed to that until now . I really felt like if it just helps one person it is worth it . So here it is: Many posts talk about when the 4WAS light comes on our rear wheel steering cars to clean/replace electrical connectors, clean the grease out of the actuator motor etc. ! After doing all that without success I finally found that the Carbon Brushes where just a smidge too short ! At first I could actually not see it but I had that feeling...So I removed the brushes out of the holder and with a Dremel tool ground the slot where the wire and the slot where the spring is riding in a little deeper . After assembling the motor I tested it by hooking up 12v DC from a batterie and by reversing the leads I could see that the motor spun in both directions ! After installing the Actuator and test driving the car the light stayed OFF ! This proofed to me that the brushes did not reach the armature but intermittently by bottoming out in the slots ! All I need to do now is buy 2 new carbon brushes and hopefully they will last another 100k miles ! I love my M37 ! I hate it for all the ones that paid big money for replacing the hole steering rack when in fact these brushes are a wear item and Infiniti should offer replacement actuators ! Hope this helps someone and good luck !

These guys have a huge online brush collection, rebuild motors, and can even rewind bad stators and armatures. There's pretty much no reason to let unobtainium motors ruin your day:

Moving to the correct forum as it was posted in the M35/M45 forum.

Great info on Repair and Parts ! My point is that I never saw [just didn't find] a post where someone got into the brushes and got it fixed by installing new [longer] ones ! Any car mechanic should be able to fix this before talking the owner into paying thousands of dollars for replacing the hole steering rack ! That includes Dealerships .

Back in the old days dealerships routinely rebuilt starters and alternators instead of replacing them. Absolutely no one does that today. Maybe if you supplied the brushes and found a knowledgeable old timer like me, but otherwise, it's a great DIY job that you'll never get a shop to do for you.
