Very long post but the read may be worth it..plus I have sweet pics
Since I date a girl who happens to have an uncle with a hefty car collection, one of them being a Euro-Spec 83' Ferrari 308, I get drug along to some really cool car shows.
One I look forward to every year is the annual meet at Cannon Beach on the northern coast of Oregon.
I went with Chrysta, my gf, in her uncle's 02' Jag XKR
He drove his 73' Detomaso Pantera (est. 400 bhp)
And her parents drove his 308This year had so-so weather most of the weekend.
We started out Friday morning with a small group from Portland and drove to the beach from there. We took the most twisty road on the entire Oregon coast - Highway 53. Amazing drive with drivers who know exactly how to push their expensive exotics.
The XKR handles like a luxury convertible should. The suspension is a little rubbery thanks to the convertable top, but it just STICKS at speed and in tight corners. (53 has over 20 switchbacks). And on straightaways the Supercharged V-8 has gobs and gobs of power to pass slower Ferraris. Do you have an idea how it feels to pass a Ferrari doing a buck twenty because he was going SLOW? All this while being swaddled in comfy black leather seats, quiet interior, and a nav system. I must say i was very happy to have had a chance to drive it in such conditions.
I've driven in the Pantera last year and I must say it is a different beast entirely. Mods done to the 351 Cleveland are a hotter cam, upgraded Auto-Lite carb (blech) and better engine breathing. 305 mil wide tires in the rear and it still breaks traction in any gear. No A/C or power steering means it gets REAL hot in the cabin with the engine sitting behind your ears. And the LOOKS you get from people you pass on the street are really entertaining. "honey is that a ferrari?" " no dear, i believe it's a corvette". But really, the car is a mother-****ing beast anyway you look at it.
I've also driven in the 308. It is a Euro Spec, so it is fuel injected and comes with 4 valves per cylinder and lighter bodywork/no emissions and 240 HP(American versions usually have carbed engines and 2 valves per cylinder and clunky emissions equipment, limiting power to 205 hp). So it isn't as fast as the jag or the Pantera, but it more than trumps them in the twisties. The suspension and handling characteristics are completely supercar. Nothing matches a Ferrari in road control and driving pleasure. And the exhaust note (upgraded Tubi exhaust) just screams and makes a wonderful siren call at high RPM.
People come from all over the Northwest, there was a huge group that came down from Seattle. And most of them stay at the same hotel. Making their parking lot a car-lover's dream to walk through. We had to stay at a cheaper hotel, aw.
In all, 39 cars ended up attending the car show at the end of the weekend, with a lot more seen just coming to say hello. ( 288 GTO passed down main street but I had neglected to bring my Camera at that point in the day:badboy )
The entire town comes out to welcome all these fantabulous sports cars. Main street is blocked off for the car show, people line the streets waiting to catch a glimpse and hear the roar of an Italian V-12. It was wonderful being the center of attention in the drop-top jag or the Beastly Pantera while cruising around town.
They love having them come to town because of the charity events and money they bring in to the town. (rich folks with loose pockets and a taste for fine wine)In total, the group made $4k at benefit auction and another 15$k through donations. All of which went to the local Fire department and Families affected by the Winter storms along the coast.
So geeze...I kind of went on for a while there... but here are the pics as promised. All of my pictures from this event and others (all very cool) can always be found at my photobucket page @

without further ado... My favorite pics were of the line of 308's in front of the huge fire engines at the fire station. Chrysta's dad used a hassleblaud (sp?) and took several high quality pics that i can;t wait to see blown up and on my wall. but i managed to snap a couple cool pics
That about does it... I had a blast, most of the owners are really great people, and they know how to have fun. The auction was hilarious with a ton of money being tossed around like jelly beans. Gawd..i'm still tingling from the sensory bombardmentHope you enjoy and can make it next year ! (would be cool to get a couple really nice nissans in the show as well..hell..they even had a crappy bimmer 328i in it...so they let any car in that ponies up the 50 dollar entry fee)
