Anyway, it was in a remote area. Some trees and squirrels died or something.

It is my understanding that earthquakes only truly pose a giant threat in developed areas because of building construction. If you lived in a hut or some kind of mud-brick dwelling, the earth rocking shouldn't be as much of a problem, right?

Anyway, looking at Google maps reveals only 10 veeeerrryyyy small towns in the vicinity of the epicenter. And by small, I mean I'm looking at 15 houses or so every 50 square miles.

Trees tend to sway, like a Japanese skyscraper.

So I guess they live in tree houses?

Different plate. If the Indian plate is in motion there are millions of people in the danger zone.

With how big the Japan quake was, and how far things are reported to have moved, I would not be surprised to see alot more "corrective" quakes as the plates resettle.

i'm just saying, last time i watched a discovery channel/national geographic special on those areas, the small village housing units weren't much more than grass huts with tree branch support structures. i can't imagine those things lasting very long in a quake.

also not saying their collapsing will kill many people, but it'd leave them homeless for a bit, i'm sure.

Like that steel and concrete coffin is going to matter when the rock around you starts doing the hula.

As of this morning the death toll has risen to 70. Plus there are lots of remote villages that are unaccounted for.

Sure. Or live near trees that, were they not to prone to sway, might fall on them in a violent earthquake.

What is up with Asian countries and denying help for their countrymen when they need help? I can understand denying military help, but what about Red Cross? Good grief.
