I have lived in FL all my life, but my family lives in NC. As the years have gone on I have been thinking of moving up there. The only thing is I know NC does inspections, what I don't know is what this means to me exactly...

I have a 1996 Nissan 240sx. Slightly modified engine that I know would not pass a smog check. I know if you know the right people (which I do) you can get passed but what happens if you get pulled over? Will moving to NC kill my chances of a engine swap (no, not another SR)?

Second we have a (beautiful) 1951 Ford F100 with a chevy 350 small block. Edelbrock everything on it... Is it even legal in NC to have a engine from one make in another?

I ask because I know some of you live in NC and must know the laws. Can they pop the hood when they pull you over?

This added with the fact that I have never driven any car on icy or snow covered roads before, at all, much less a RWD and that makes me a little jumpy. How well can you slide a AWD? lol

Really, thanks for any help you can be. Living with no smog or inspection all of my life has let us do some crazy things to cars down here, things I know would not make it to the road up there.

You shouldn't have any problems with the Ford to my knowledge...it's old enough to be exempt from pretty much everything that could cause issues.

NC is pretty chill about the whole motor swap... in other words they(DMV) don't have much of a clue, nor do they care.... as long as your car will pass inspection..... meaning

1996 and older- simple safety: All lights (turn sigs, heady, tails, reverse) horn, tires (tread), mirrors. Simple- $10 fee

1996 and Newer- OBDII inspection: they plug in to your port and as long as your ECU is not throwing a code... you should be good. plus the above safety. $35 fee

this new inspection change went into effect January 2006. We used to have the tailpipe sniffer thing.... but no longer.

No smog tho... this ain't quite Cali. I don't think you would have any problems w/ your SR... but if you would like to ask some SR Carolinians try this site Carolinanissans.com the guys are pretty friendly and some very knowledegable. As far as getting pulled... why let'em catch you?lol. they don't ask to pop hoods unless to admire. just turn off the car. Ice... sometimes.. they're usually good about salting if raining/below freezing forecasted; but snow.. rarely my friend, in late Jan- Feb mmaybee, it'd be gone before you go to work. Once every few years a possible blizzard... no colorado style tho.

AWD-slide? We had a "blizzard" a few years back...in my '95 Mitsu GSX (lowered,18s, 400hp) i was passing stuck 4wd trucks, just smiling and waving! I did manage to rip off my oil press. sending unit wire.. but that was it.Good luck with your decision... and if you make it up, Welcome to NC

The issue is the 240. It has to be hooked up to the computer. That is where you will have problems. Now if you know someone that can hook you up on that, then you will not have any other problems. One note is not every county requires this as of yet, but most do and he rest will sooner or later. Let us know if the SR will pass the puter check. IT's not something I have ever heard yay or nay on...

Heck you can do like me, and just not get it inspected. Of course teh Trooper wasnt real nice when he asked, "Sir, is tehre any reason your inspection sticker has been out for three years?" Me, "It slipped my mind."

Cops here dont do road side smog or anythign else like that. As far as the Ford it is legal to put in different engines as long as the engine is newer, not older then the vehicle it's going in. We found that one out after my associate blew the motor in the truck I sold him.
