****, first of all, please let me add the disclaimer that my buddies got me hammered to distract me from that fact that my car decided to blow **** apart tonight.

As i was driving home tonight i heard a shattering bang sound from my engine bay, and immediatly pulled over, when i popped the hood i heard a god awful rattling, clicking sound from my motor, it seems my belt for my fan decided to snap, catch around the pulley, shear off and fly through my my shroud, and radiator, put like a 2 finger sized hole in my rad. Seems i need to find myself some parts, any ideas what i can find here for a new shroud, 2 new belts, (alternator, steering, water pump, fan etc all lost belt) a new rad, and the big issue, a new pully mechanism, it looks like the whole pointly spindle sheared off, wtf can i use for this that i can find here? the car is a 90 silvia with a CA in it. Thanks, i hope that made sense to you all.

pointy spindle? you mean the fan clutch (spring thing with liens coming out of the middle n stuff) ? or the water pully's snout that the pully mounts to ?

pics would help..

whatever radiator you get, get an all metal one is my vote, no silly plastic endtanks. you might even grab yourself a Koyo one (can get the KA one, same thing), altho it may be overkill for Canada

Was this all stock (i.e. as it came from japan) ? If you changed the water pump then you might have ended up with a FWD one and if you used a RWD pully on it bad things happen (altho I believe if that is the cause, this is the most catastrophic we've yet witnessed)..

You'll definately want a new shroud as not having it on a mechanical fan setup would seriously impede cooling since the air would spin around rather than come through the radiator.

Another option would be to drop in electric fans of some kind, and ditch the mechanical fan alltogether. Any respectable e-fans should come with their own shroud built in. I'm sure you could search up all kinds of opinions on models and brands here.. personally I have a SPAL dual 11" setup, had to make custom mounting brackets out of aluminum strips (thin 'bars') and L-bends and such, but it wasn't too bad.. barely fits in there tho, it's leaning to the left side.

i'll take some pics tommorow when im more coordinated and its not dark, the bit that broke off is still attached to the fan, and there is a pointy bearing housing still attached to the upper left side of motor, hopefully that makes sense, but ill try and explain better in the mornign.

thats about what i had happen... 3 times. sounds like you need to get yourself a set of electric fans and ditch that clutch fan. i did and it hasnt happened since. the first time the water pump broke in half and the pulley tried to make a break for it. second time the shaft out of the pump broke. third time the pump blew up and the pulley took large chunks out of my crank pulley, then went through the radiator. i lost all the belts and my coolant went everywhere. fear not sir! you are not alone. seriously though, the clutch fan is evil.

Holy ****,

I guess i might have to look more seriously into electric fans then, i dont want to do this again, and i really dont want to put a hole in my next rad which will prob be a koyo. How much of a pain is it to replace all that, doesnt look too bad to me? Oh and do you know what the belts are here in north america, or at least what belts cross over?

belts for a ca18de from a '88 pulsar nx. its not too bad to replace things, it doesnt involve removing the timing belt or anything. just the lower timing cover. youll need an 8mm wrench or socket. other than that its just the usual 10/12mm junk.

if you're looking for the radiator shroud and clutch fan, i've got them both, i think...the shroud is a trimmed ka one but it works, however, i have these fine items for sale because i have a 'lectric fanned motorvator...my opinion, ditch the mechanical and free up some space in yar engine bay...good luck

if you dont have the money you could always get a fan setup from the altimas that have the KA in them. It is a dual electric fan set-up and each fan has two speeds so there is a lot of room for creativity. It also mounts to the stock rad with little modification. You could get one in a junkyard for like $20.

This was th ebest pic i had on hand of the altima fans.
