Car: 94 240sx vert a/t, a/c, cold air intake, header, test cat, cat back exh.Problem: between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm's (sometime's) will spit and sputer. This began last year. The distributor went out and it was replaced. Car ran fine. Tried a new coil, plug's, wire's, fuel filter. Everything still stock up to this point. It would come and go. I put on the cold air intake and problem got better( a little). Put my exhaust on and the problem stayed the same. I suspect the mass air flow but have no way of testing it. I do not have one to swap it out with. A reman cost $300 buck's, used about $100. Any suggestion's? Thank's.

it sounds to me like a common EGR valve problem check for movement in the diaphgram it should move freely, also a clogged egr tube that runs to the exhaust.

I agree with his assessment. It's at least it's a pretty easy thing to clean out and you'll know right away.

MAF sensors typically crap out at 3k rpms. Seemingly never fails that 3k is mentioned and it turns out to be MAF blown.

Have you checked the intake system well for loose hoses or bad connections anywhere? Could be that your sucking in un-metered air?

Any build up or corrosion on the plugs? Have you pulled them back out to inspect them since you put them in?

Is your timing set correctly?

I would start by installing a OEM distributor cap and rotor. Then onto the plug wires and plugs. I would replace only one part at a time so you can determine which item has an effect,if any...Also as stated above that EGR valve and the ignition timing should be easy tests. Good luck.

I have got the EGR valve off. Had to replace the EGR tube. $$$$. wow. I will clean & check the valve. The plug's are okay. The two middle one's have some gas on them. Maybe due to short drive(100ft) to the garage. I will clean and inspect everything else. Thanks to all. I will keep you updated.

i read your thread about the egr valve . i think my is clogged with a plastic bag .... i have a nissan 240 sx .. 91 and the bag was suck through the mass air flow .. now the car will not go over 40 mph and idles rough .. . do you think that is the problem? there is exhaust leaking up in the right passenger fender and i can see . i was going to take off the exhaust manifold but if i could remove the egr valve .... i think that would be easier . how is this done ? thanks mike

I agree with 240. I had similar symptoms once my 240 would warm up. and these remedies worked
