I have a stock 98 240sx which I would like to use for a drift build, but I have absolutely no idea where to start/what to do. I have some basic mechanical knowledge and skill, money is not going to be an issue. Help please?

First - I wouldn't say money won't be an issue. Unless you are crazy rich, don't say that. You would be surprised what things cost and how the little things add up.

Second - I would use the search around and see other peoples builds and what they did and find what you like.

My Opinion - You can drift with a stock vehicle as long as its RWD and has some sort of locker/LSD. It may not be pretty, but its possible. Before you consider any mods, make sure your car is in good working order. No leaks, or bad joints. Fix all problems because drifting will make small problems worse. IMO the most important thing to a drift car is a good diff. I would get a 2-way Kaaz if money is no issue. This is a good drifting diff. If money is an issue, a welded diff is fantastic. Next I would highly recommend suspension. Coilovers are great. A lower center of gravity and less body roll are helpful. Lastly I would say a bucket seat. Nothing is more annoying than sliding around in your seat while you are sliding around in your car. After that, mod as you wish. May drifters place a high importance on style, so you can consider that but its all really up to you. I wouldn't worry about adding power. You can drift just fine with low power. The best drift car is a simple drift car that you can maintain cheaply and is as reliable as possible. Seat time is your friend and will quickly become your lover.

yur going to ruin pretty much the rarest year 240.... so you can slide around a track? just a forewarning, your going to get a lot of hate for your build. but its yur car, so we can't stop you.... but welcome nicoclub anyway :bigthumb:

as for building a drift car, start with a differential that makes it easy to kick out the back-end. best thing to do is just to weld the diff if yur set on drifting this thing. then upgrade yur brakes (especially rear) with some Z32 brakes to start (or better depending on yur budget). then you might consider a turbo for some power, but its possible to drift a stock 240 with a ka24de.

First, make sure you are 5-speed.

Then weld the diff or get a 2-way LSD.

Get coilovers ( I suggest Fortune Auto), RUCA's, toe, tension and traction rods.

Do a full tune up on the KA and enjoy! no need for an engine swap unless you kill the KA. It's the perfect engine to start drifting on and is already in the car!

lmao yeah, you cant drift unless you have a manual transmission. that should be the first thing hahaha

Which would be better, GReddy TD06S 20G, or a Garrett GTX3076R?

That's a personal decision. Both are great turbos, I'd go for 3076R between the two, but since I'm not able to sink all my money into the car I'd rather get a GS 20G turbo or a Holset. Everyone I know who's owned one has never had any issues and it won't break the bank.

I assume you are turboing the KA? And you car is an attractive build, it just makes us cringe thinking it'll be hitting guard rails and such eventually!

Yeah its the KA, I was leaning toward the 3076R. And I have been putting money back for quite some time for the build, I have about 60k to throw at it right now. So money isnt a huge factor at the moment.

You can drift with a stock KA, especially if you're just starting out. Welded diff + some coilovers and go drifting. Kinda sucks that you're using a '98 because they are super rare, but its your car to destroy as you wish :rotfl

Most of all just get out there. Dont throw random mods at it, you'll be wasting money. Get a welded diff, some decent coils, and go get some seat time. THEN figure out whats lacking and modify accordingly. Good luck!

You have 60k and you wanna blow it on a 240? How old are you guy?

No offense but the fact that you came here and have no clue where to even start with a drift car says you probably shouldn't get into the sport. But if you insist, weld your diff gears, get some coilovers and cheap skinny used tires.

It IS an attractive build, that's why people won't like you for destroying the car drifting.

If you have 60k to blow, buy a brand new brz and a spare brz.

What people are telling you is stop thinking you'll be all like tokyo drift, do the simple things you need to to learn to drift, see if you can drift and like drifting, and then worry about dumping money into something that doesn't really take money. And of course, they're telling you that ruining a 98 is dumb.

I think if you really had the money, you'd just buy a more sensible car to drift, anyway. Being all tokyo drift isn't like 500 bucks.

All summed up: it will not be like tokyo drift. Stop.

I am going to go ahead and place dibs on a couple of your parts when total your car. I will take the radio trim bezel and your tails pending they aren't smashed. Also would be interested in the headlights as spares as they are PITA to find and one of mine has a small chip. :)

Think "generic pop culture drift reference". He could have just as easily said Initial D takumi, or ken block.

I think what he was getting at is, you seem to give the impression that drifting an incredibly rare car is no big deal. Thus referencing a media reference wherein people can drift forever without any ill consequence. Tokyo drift being a particularly appropriate reference since skippy in the beginning totally thrashes his car, and and every car in his path, in the process of trying to slide his car around the parking lot chasing mr drift king dude. Unlike in these ficticious situations where they drift and drift and drift and maybe make a few repairs here and there and everything is ok, if you're seriously going to drift an incredibly rare car, be prepared to say goodbye to it forever sooner or later.

One of two things eventually happens - it survives because you stopped drifting it, or you keep drifting it till it's toast. This is nothing to do with your drift skillz - this is the inevitable fate of all drift cars. Even pro's hit walls and total cars. Enjuku's Pat Goodin is I think on his 3rd chassis and 4th engine, or something like that, in the last 5 years or so.

Case in point - if you look around on all the builds here, not always, but mostly: If it's a race car, it's an S13. If it's an S14, it's not a race car. Again, not always the case, but more true than not. And this is despite the fact that the S14 is supposed to have better suspension geometry. This is BECAUSE its alot easier to find a replacement s13 than an s14.

But hey, if you actually do have 60K to just hose at a car, maybe even a mint 98 is "just another car" to you :gotme Either way i'll be neat to see how you build it and how it runs. And don't forget pix :bigthumb:

Well, if it's metal you can fix it... you don't have to drive at a professional level and risk your car to drift.

But this guy just screams tokyo drift.

Just understand you won't really be.... anything like tokyo drift.

Of course there's always exceptions - and know that nothing I say is meant to be a be-all-end-all blanket statement of anything. But really, even being careful and responsible and methodical, any time you slide a car the odds of it suffering damage do rise a little. And if you're the type of person who thinks drifting is as easy as "buy rwd 5 spd car, install (list of mods), drift like takumi", odds are the car's days are numbered. When this thread opened with the words "noob" and "drift", I got the same fast n furious vibe. The "rare car" factor only added to it.

But you know what, I do have to agree with Krash's sentiment. It may not be my thing, but it's still a 240sx thing. And if a 98 is gonna get hammered with 60K of mods and slid around to extinction whether I like it or not, I'm at least gonna make sure not to miss the show :mike

BTW pix of this 98 you're gonna build and slide?
