Great site guys!Thank god for the net.

I checked out a '95 J30 today, and am seriously thinking about buying it. But there's one major problem, there's a rod with a cylinder (I can put my finger through it) hanging out at an approx 45 degree angle right behind the front driver side tire.I test drove it around a parking lot doing slow donuts, semi-fast speed ups, semi-hard breaking, and a semi-fast reverse (about 100'). The car seemed to handle fine, though I didn't go faster than 40mph.

Any idea what it could be? I started a thread about it at a site I frequent often, and one guy said that it might be the sway bar link. Here's a link to my thread: http://www.sternfannetwork.com...31457

If I saw a pic of the part I could definitely point it out, but I have been unable to find any pics of it. I do remember that the cylinder part of the rod was half notched and I could put my finger through the middle of it. Does that make any sense?

Thanks for any help.

can you not tell by looking under the car your self???if its a sway bar link or the lower control arm itself there both easy fixes as i just did a whole strut assembly lower control arm and both end links and new brakes and only took me 2 hours!!!!if its the end link no worries right away!!! but if its the control arm the one with the big nut through it get it as ap!!!!

oldpaddy welcome to Nico!!

a few things to keep in mind when buying a used J:

Purchase one, that has as complete a service history as possible otherwise you'll spend a lot of time and $$$ bringing it up to where it should be.

Be prepared, parts are expensive for J's and most parts are dealer only. Sooner or later something is going to go wrong and it will cost you.

There are a few thing noted in the "stuck" thread "J30 FAQ" above towards the bottom that you should look out for in a J.

In general. well maintained J's are very reliable, classy, comfortable, luxury cruiser touring cars that still turn heads. If your looking for a tuner car, you may be disappointed. The J is a heavy car with not a whole lot of low end torque and really can't be tuned like a lot of Asian imports.
