I want my q to have a deeper tone. you know, more badass. How would I go about doing this? Is it just a matter of replacing the muffler with a borla or magnaflow, or is there more to it? Yes I am a car noob and not ashamed. well maybe a little ashamed. either way, any help is appreciated.

An inexpensive option would be swapping the rear muffler with a Magnaflow unit.

I put an aftermarket catback on my Frontier and loved it (can't recall brand, but I think they made a system for the Pathfinder - same vehicle as yours).

so in short, swapping the rear muffler would in fact give me the desired result of a deeper note? What kinda install are we talking, bolts and screws or welding?

Not sure - Get under there and see how the OEM one is attached.

A muffler shop can cut / weld the new one in pretty easily.

well I went under and saw that the muffler is welded onto a pipe which is bolted to a pipe from the catalytic converter (I think that is what it was). Either way it looks like a simple bolt on. There's no sensors I need to worry about in the muffler right?

Yeah i don't think there would be any sensors as long as you don't mess with the catalytic converter. i really want to get rid of the hideous exhaust pipe from my Q. WTF were they thinking when they designed the stock one?

You got me, it does look terrible. I'm taking it to a performance shop tomorrow to see what they think. I may just use their advice and do it myself. I don't think there is any welding that should be involved. Also is there a resonator on the 99 Q? I looked but couldn't find anything that looks like one.

so I went to the shop today and they want to take out the center muffler, join the two pipes into one and run it back to the rear muffler. If that doesn't produce the sound I want then they would replace the rear muffler with a performance part. All for $250. Think I should go for it?

I was quoted 210 for the same thing so I would think it about the right price. 210 was without a muffler and it was taking out the stock mufler running the 2 2" pipes into a single 2.5" and then I provide a muffler for the rear. Im not sure if I will do it I might just replace the muffler with a FLowmaster and run a tailpipe out the back with a nice tip. not sure yet.
