I've done lots of installs of different cars but the Q was THE toughest install OF ALL TIME.
1) There's no room in the kick-panels to do a custom kick-panel enclosure, on either side.
2) The stock bose speakers are 4" front doors and 6x9" in the rear deck. At first, I just wanted to buy some high quality A/D/S or Focal Polykevlar 4" coaxials and just put them in the bose boxes but that didn't quite work because they boxes were too shallow and have a weird 3-bolt pattern instead...So in the end, I ended up fabbing a cutout of MDF by using a jigsaw to mount the 6.5"components I now have in the doors.
3) There is no aftermarket harness that can be adapted to a first-gen Q. If there is, I've never seen it. I don't have a service manual so I had to painstakingly "trace" every single wire going into the Bose h/u. If you're an amateur, don't try this, one wrong wire and your h/u will be a paperweight.
4) Because there are no openings from the trunk into the cabin, the benefits of a subwoofer would be almost nil unless you had a super-powerful one with at least 400w.
The Q is not the easiest car to do a custom install on but for the love of car audio, I tread the waters anyway.
I'll post up pictures of my system soon but it's gone through many, many different phases from cheap budget system, to SQ to SPL and now it's a bit of both SPL/SQ.
1. Nakimichi 45Z head/unit (replaced an Eclipse 55430 deck, before that I had a Pioneer deck- the weakest of the three decks I've owned, by far)
2. Alpine ERA-G320 14-band sound-field processor (tons of features from 9 different soundfield modes ie Hall, live, theatre, etc., I can tweak and tune EVERYTHING at my leisure) BUT I'm selling this EQ and I'm getting a PPI half-din EQ instead for the stealth look
3. CDT 63DT 6.5" Braxial components
4. CDT CL61 5.25" Classic coaxials for rearfill (used to have Infinity Kappa 3-ways which were louder, but the CDT's sound sweeter)
5. Hifonics Zeus Z600 150Wx2 amp power the Braxials (used to have an Autotek SX5750 5-Channel amp, before that had a PPI amp and before that I had Soundstream amp) The Hifonics and Autotek are superior to almost any other brand in terms of performance/quality per dollar. The absolute best bargain I've come across.
6. Pioneer GM-X352 100Wx2 for the rearfill
7. Hifonics Samson 450W mono powering the lone IDQ 12" sub in a custom enclosure. I used to have 2 IDQ's powered by a 1200W Lanzar Vibe but apparently the Q's alternator couldn't take the abuse...I'll be dumping both this amp and the IDQ in favor of a more powerful IDMAX 15" sub and Hifonics Boltar amp.
So far, I've been very happy with my system. I too once believed the Bose was the be-all, end-all of car audio. Boy was I stupid.
