my dad has a 1st gen q45 a 1991... the right side speaker is on the blink,,,,, now he has the complete bose system which he thinks is the best thing since sliced bread... but im into car audio and i would like to change out the front door speakers with aftermarket speakers... but i dont know what size they are neither do i know the depth ... is this an easy unplug and plug in or do i have to do some cutting of wires to put in the new speakers.... also is the front door ported,, i could have sworn there was air coming out of the door,, maybe i was wrong.....

also what is everyone else running,,, im unable to change out that bose tape deck,,, but i do want to change the speakers and maybe get a cheap 8" sub like the jl audio 8.1 microsub,,(which i already have)

thanks..... :help

The amps are integrated into each of the 4 speakers, so you can't just swap out speakers.

The rule of thumb is to either: 1) fix the existing Clarion/Bose system, or 2) rip it out and start from scratch.

Bose will rebuild the front speakers/amps for a decent price (or maybe for free?). Someone else may have more info on that route.

Is it still Dad's car? Or your car now?

On you 1991 they'll do it for free... it's in the recall years for the flaming rear amps. That brings up another point... did your dad take his Q in for the rear amp recall? If not you want to send all four speaker/amp assemblies off at the same time at no charge... you'll pay shipping, but you'll also get new speaker cones. It's amazing how good that system sounds with all new amps/speakers.

Free is good.

I've done lots of installs of different cars but the Q was THE toughest install OF ALL TIME.

1) There's no room in the kick-panels to do a custom kick-panel enclosure, on either side.

2) The stock bose speakers are 4" front doors and 6x9" in the rear deck. At first, I just wanted to buy some high quality A/D/S or Focal Polykevlar 4" coaxials and just put them in the bose boxes but that didn't quite work because they boxes were too shallow and have a weird 3-bolt pattern instead...So in the end, I ended up fabbing a cutout of MDF by using a jigsaw to mount the 6.5"components I now have in the doors.

3) There is no aftermarket harness that can be adapted to a first-gen Q. If there is, I've never seen it. I don't have a service manual so I had to painstakingly "trace" every single wire going into the Bose h/u. If you're an amateur, don't try this, one wrong wire and your h/u will be a paperweight.

4) Because there are no openings from the trunk into the cabin, the benefits of a subwoofer would be almost nil unless you had a super-powerful one with at least 400w.

The Q is not the easiest car to do a custom install on but for the love of car audio, I tread the waters anyway.

I'll post up pictures of my system soon but it's gone through many, many different phases from cheap budget system, to SQ to SPL and now it's a bit of both SPL/SQ.

1. Nakimichi 45Z head/unit (replaced an Eclipse 55430 deck, before that I had a Pioneer deck- the weakest of the three decks I've owned, by far)

2. Alpine ERA-G320 14-band sound-field processor (tons of features from 9 different soundfield modes ie Hall, live, theatre, etc., I can tweak and tune EVERYTHING at my leisure) BUT I'm selling this EQ and I'm getting a PPI half-din EQ instead for the stealth look

3. CDT 63DT 6.5" Braxial components

4. CDT CL61 5.25" Classic coaxials for rearfill (used to have Infinity Kappa 3-ways which were louder, but the CDT's sound sweeter)

5. Hifonics Zeus Z600 150Wx2 amp power the Braxials (used to have an Autotek SX5750 5-Channel amp, before that had a PPI amp and before that I had Soundstream amp) The Hifonics and Autotek are superior to almost any other brand in terms of performance/quality per dollar. The absolute best bargain I've come across.

6. Pioneer GM-X352 100Wx2 for the rearfill

7. Hifonics Samson 450W mono powering the lone IDQ 12" sub in a custom enclosure. I used to have 2 IDQ's powered by a 1200W Lanzar Vibe but apparently the Q's alternator couldn't take the abuse...I'll be dumping both this amp and the IDQ in favor of a more powerful IDMAX 15" sub and Hifonics Boltar amp.

So far, I've been very happy with my system. I too once believed the Bose was the be-all, end-all of car audio. Boy was I stupid. :D

The recall was only on the rear amps and it was several years ago, and chances are that has already been done if the car was dealer serviced. (Most dealers are good about doing recall stuff even if customer is not aware).

Check the dealer service records to see for sure.

You're on your own with the front speakers/amps but some have found Bose to be generous (might charge, might not).

JC Whitney also sells an adapter for the Q for maybe $7 if I remember right. The recall is only on the rears, but *some* members have been lucky in getting them all rebuilt. I'm guessing a dealer would never rebuild them all, but Clarion might do it out of goodwill.

Unless the Clarion is particularly retarded, it is a double DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung).

For us Amerikanischers, it is German Standards Institute.

I am familiar with the factory recal for the rear amps, but I was told by the dealer that the front amps were not covered under the recall.

I have put in 3 different speaker assemblies in the front and they have all died within a couple of months. It's gotten so frustrating that I am about to start from scratch and replace the whole system.

Can you tell me where to send the amps of for repair for FREE?

Free is certainly good!

Who was lucky enough to get the fronts rebuilt for free?

I tried resently, with no luck. It's going to cost me $75 plus about $15 for shipping for one front speaker. Now that's worth it to me if make a big difference. But if it doesn't, I would much rather that money go into a new system.

aaacomp, which Clarion did you get and how does it compare to your stock Bose? What did you do with your old speakers? Email me if there in any condition to sell.

I was... I have a 90Q, but installed a 1991 system (long story) - when I called Bose they said they have an internal policy of fixing the front amps at no charge on the recall years. More of a P.R. move than anything - no danger of a fire, but it's hard to convince people who were told the rears may catch on fire that the fronts that are popping and squaling are safe!

I'd call and see if they're still doing the free fronts...

What I did: Went to the junkyard, got the amp for $36. Came with a 6-month warranty. Preferably, get them from a 95-97 Mazda Millenia. They sound closest to Infiniti OEM amps. They are an exact fit.
