Hey guys... Looked through the tons of useful information on here but I'm missing proabably something discussed 100 times... so bear with me.

Just bought a 2004 G35X. Of course it has 50,000 (2,000 over the warranty) and has developed a serious miss in its firing. I took it to a local mechanic (no dealer within 35 miles of here) and he brought up a code of 1282. Looking through the forum here and elsewhere I can't find that code listed.

The problem is not too bad sometimes, bad most of the time, but real bad on occassion. At idle it shakes (sometimes harder than others) and when I go to take off it coughs and lags big time. Almost to the point of stalling.

I took out the air filter to see if it may help, but nothing... The mechanic said the code printed off a 9 page diagnostic chart for him to follow and it could take 1-5 hours to find. I like to do this stuff on my own and have been able to on my two previous Infinitis bit where to start??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from any of you ASAP...

Welcome to Nico

It could possibly be the MAF. If the air filter is not changed regularly the MAF can get messed up. I change my air filter every 8-10k miles

I would take the vehicle to a dealer and ask for a loaner.

good luck

Hmm, interesting. I'm no expert on these types of things, but I can make good guesses using the little info I know. You say it idles hard and when you try and take off, it coughs? I wonder if its getting enough gas? Could be the fuel filter. You may have a dirty or damaged MAF. I don't know where people get lists of codes from, there are some around here that know them. They should be able to help you out more.

Double check the code you got. The Factory service manual doesn't mention that code. Actually, I've only seen that code in a Jeep and Bimmer forum.

Verify the code. If it is indeed 1282, reset the ECU and get the code checked again.

Autozone checks for free (most of them).

Autozone and Advance gave me wrong advice on several problems.Call your local NISSAN dealer and ask them how much they would charge to do a diagnostic to tell you EXACTLY what is wrong.

I recently had a CEL on my cobra.Went to Autozone and the code pointed to a mis-fire.Replaced the number 1 bank spark plugs.Light came back on after 50 miles.Ended up going to Furd and paid the $89 for the diagnostics. They said it was the pass. side front O2 sensor.Bought one, installed it, got the car inspected.

Had a similiar experience with my 01 Pathy and Advance.

Might be worth the $ to get Nissan to check it out, if they can.Would be worth a call to check the price at Infiniti and Nissan.

Mandalay12:

I have had a similar problem with my little Nissan before. There is a 50 - 50 chance that the problem you have is an emissions related problem----02 sensors, purge valves, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR valves). When an engine shakes that way at idle, it is usually not an electrical or intake problem. Intake problems don't make a car shake---they usually cause RPM to go up and down by itself. However, O2 sensor or ECU looking for correct timing, will do the same as well. Nonetheless, i feel the shaking is a sign that some gas (HC, Co2, or NOX) may not be circulating properly in/out of the engine.

Do one thing first: replace the PCV valve since it deals with gases (HC and Co2) and see what happens.

Secondly, if the shaking continues after replacing PCV valve, then ask your mechanic to find the EGR valve which controls the NOX emission. You will notice some vacuum hoses connected to the EGR valve, if any. Disconnect those hoses or the EGR valve and see if the car starts running well. Most cars will run well without an EGR valve. If it does run well then that is your problem. However, you will need to buy another EGR valve or else you won't pass the NOX emissions. EGR valve can go bad in any car at anytime, and it is one of the most annoying things that can make your car run rough for a long time if not detected on time.

So, focus on two valves here: PCV valve and EGR valve. Let me know what you come up with. However, if this ends up to be an 02 problem then this is confounding.

I wasn't suggesting he take Autozone's advice on repairing it. Just borrowing their scan tool.

I've only been to one Autozone that won't scan for free. It was near Rosamond...d!ck!

I bought my own scan tool, so I don't have to mess with any dealers or mechanics.

But I guess firstly, welcome to Nico, I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're having... I'm not sure, but it sounds like you could have a bad MAF sensor, it sits in the Intake, you could take a look, see if it's clean.

Also, check all your plugs, as a bad gap or plug could cause similar symptoms... I experienced some shutter / shake on the highway, and some missing at idle... solution? bad gaps on two plugs, got a tourque wrench for accurate tightening also.

it's a good idea to check them anyway when you first buy a car, see how well it was maintained, check the fluids ASAP. And lastly, make sure you have no blocking in your intake, as lack of air could also cause the engine to "almost stall".

Good luck my friend, sorry again about your problems...

ANSWER !! First off, thanks so much for your responses to my initial post. I look forward to reading through many of the posts and looking through the rides pictured. So, thanks!

The car went into the local Nissan dealer Friday at 4pm as it backfired while merging onto the highway heading to relatives for the holiday. Thankfully, the dealership's Certified GTR Mechanic was on hand to diagnose. CarX did misread the code (they read 1282) and the dealer came up with a 1283 and 0102. After further inspection the Air/Fuel sensor on bank 2 needs replacing. In his words "it is acting irratically". A call to the dealer (Infiniti of Orland Park) and I have an appointment for the warranty work TWO WEEKS from today (I thought that was a bit excessive).

Anyway, thanks again for all your input !

If I need warranty work, I try and get it there during an oil change so that way they have to take it and I get a loaner for as long as they have it. Then I don't have to wait 2 weeks for my appointment. But the dealership is also really good in getting appointments set up in a short time.

Why you visit dealer every 90 days for an oil [3,750 mile] change so that they can find warranty items to charge Nissan to replace.
