I have had a similar problem with my little Nissan before. There is a 50 - 50 chance that the problem you have is an emissions related problem----02 sensors, purge valves, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR valves). When an engine shakes that way at idle, it is usually not an electrical or intake problem. Intake problems don't make a car shake---they usually cause RPM to go up and down by itself. However, O2 sensor or ECU looking for correct timing, will do the same as well. Nonetheless, i feel the shaking is a sign that some gas (HC, Co2, or NOX) may not be circulating properly in/out of the engine.
Do one thing first: replace the PCV valve since it deals with gases (HC and Co2) and see what happens.
Secondly, if the shaking continues after replacing PCV valve, then ask your mechanic to find the EGR valve which controls the NOX emission. You will notice some vacuum hoses connected to the EGR valve, if any. Disconnect those hoses or the EGR valve and see if the car starts running well. Most cars will run well without an EGR valve. If it does run well then that is your problem. However, you will need to buy another EGR valve or else you won't pass the NOX emissions. EGR valve can go bad in any car at anytime, and it is one of the most annoying things that can make your car run rough for a long time if not detected on time.
So, focus on two valves here: PCV valve and EGR valve. Let me know what you come up with. However, if this ends up to be an 02 problem then this is confounding.
