I had a CEL in my recently-acquired '97 S14 SE (auto trans, 150k miles). Car runs and drives just fine, has sort of a hard 1--->2 shift and a minor rear brake noise.

I checked the ECU today and I got back what looked all the world like code 87.

It flashed 8 long flashes and 7 short flashes, I watched it probably 5 times.

That isn't listed on the Malfunction codes in the FAQ....any idea what it might be?

Yeah, I guess I'll have to.

I've managed to read some codes for my old '98 the old fashioned way, but I guess it won't work this time. Not a big deal, I know a place that'll probably do it gratis, I expected every code to be on the FAQ.

Thanks.

Ok, a little update (for future searchers).

I did not need an OBD-II tool to read this code, but it was also not listed in the FAQ (something I'd like to change).

There are a number of codes related to the EVAP system that will produce strange ECU code numbers not found or listed anywhere but the FSM. If you get a code number you can't look up on the traditional list, try reading it as follows:

87 would be 0807

This is most likely an EVAP code, which generally doesn't really affect the actual operation of the car, but still produces a pesky CEL.

These can be looked up in the FSM in the "EC" section.

Now I get to go figure out how to get RID of this code. Mine is for the Purge Control Valve and Solenoid Valve. I guess I'll try cleaning the solenoid and checking for vacuum leaks first, and then just replace the whole kit-and-kaboodle if that doesn't work. Anyone with further insight is welcome to chime in.
