I have seen people run them on standard pump gas (87 octane) but I am sure there is a reason that the manufacturer calls for the use of premium. I don't know about you, but with a nice car like a Z32, I'd just suck it up and run the premium for 20 cents a gallon more.
Absoultely.Don't put crap in a VG powered car, they're all too nice to ruin. You'll harm your engine if you use too low an octane. Pinging or "pre-detonation" is very hard on an engine, and will doom your car to an early grave. Also, isn't the Z a performance car? (note the sarcasm, please ) Using crap gas will reduce both performance AND fuel milage.
Of course, alternately, there is no need to go too HIGH on octane, either. It is not beneficial, and is sometimes slightly disadvantageous, as it can also decrease fuel milage (I'll hear arguments there, but I've got real-world proof, and can be backed up by other members even, so take that as you will...). There's no point in paying for something you don't need.
Your owners manual recommends what it does for a reason. Follow it, and your car will last longer and run better.
Also, F.I. is FAR from the only reason cars would require higher octane fuel.If you did a bit of research, I'm willing to bet you'd find just as many naturally aspirated cars that recommend or require higher octanes as turbo/supercharged.
