So I was going through the thread on the specs and colors for the M and it specifically says the "aluminum" trim was for SPORT models only. Well, I have a NON-sport model and I have the aluminum trim. STRANGE THING IS when I put down the rear armrest, my ashtray is woodgrain.

So I am wondering if the car was ordered from the factory with the aluminum and they forgot about the ashtray OR someone took the time to buy the aluminum pieces and swap them out. I dont see them buying a new headunit just for that but I have seen some stupid things out there.

Thoughts? And does anyone else with non-sport have aluminum?

Far as I am aware, aluminum is ONLY in the S models (not a fan of aluminum and that's why I didn't want an S).

It's likely that whomever had the car before you wrapped the trim pieces in 3M Aluminum.

There is a thread in here with all sorts of wraps done on the trim pieces including white and black aluminum, carbon fibre, and I think it's Mr Luv who did a dip on his trim with the best looking wood trim I've seen anywhere.

If it is wrapped with a 3M or similar product, you can remove it by heating it gently with a hair dryer and peeling it slowly - it will NOT leave glue or marks behind - it will just show the wood that is underneath it. If it's actual aluminum pieces, then the last owner must have bought them from an Infiniti parts shop.

I left my wood trim alone, but I added carbon fiber wrap to the muiti-switch and the console to cover the original material that matched the dash:

It is most certainly not wrapped. I have worked with and seen vinyl wrap many times. It is not real aluminum either. Its plastic with a brushed look and has black lines on it.

I just took the pictures below from a 35 page sales book for the M that the dealerships had back when this car was being sold as new. Might not be that much help to you, but it sounds like you have OEM aluminum since you mentioned the black lines.

Yep its the factory aluminum...looks like that swatch. Only thing is...supposedly it was only an option for the sports model. Can anyone actually confirm?

It was, at least in 2006, a DEALER option to add the aluminum trim to any M. Had to be done at the dealership. I liked the aluminum for about a month and then got tired of it. I picked up a set of used trim and wrapped it in black steel. Still have the original factory aluminum should I decide to go back and it is a thin aluminum sheet on top of a plastic backing piece.

I like the initial wow factor of wood but after riding in a car with the wood I grow tired of it quickly....just does not work for me for some reason. The pictures do not do the wrap justice. It is actually very warm and when light hits it during the day it picks up a pearl effect.

Thanks for confirming dealer option....I was pretty sure it came with all of this already on. Throws me off though that the rear arm rest has woodgrain.

I wasnt a fan of the woodgrain in the M...to me it honestly looked cheap. I am happy with the aluminum and have been able to pull off even a VIP build around it so no issue.

To my knowledge, there is no aluminum piece for the rear arm rest---the arm rest is different in your M due to your option package and those options were not available on the Sport (rear entertainment for example) so there was no need to make an aluminum trim piece.

IIRC, people were trading each other woodgrain for aluminum on this very forum a few years ago. If you got your car used, perhaps you got it from someone who did that.
