I have a 1996 Nissan Quest GXE..6 cylinder, 3.0 liter engine..I need to know if this is a non interference motor. I also need to know if a timing belt "jumping" time can cause the cam shaft to break in this vehicle.I recently took the van to get a water pump replaced, then the repair man stated that it would need a new timing belt.. I agreed, a week later he says that it jumped timing and needed a head job..Not true, as I had a dealership diagnose the problem and they found that the cam shaft had been busted..The man still states that it jumped timing and caused this problem..the repair bill is about 1500.00..I need to know as much information about this motor as possible as we may be heading to court..Thank You

Yes the motor is an interference type, that doesn't excuse poor workmanship in changing the timing belt, etc.

the 93 to 02 quest is the only non-interferance motor in nissans fleet. the reason is fords part in its production. Since this van is also badged as a mercury villager one of fords requirements is that the valves must not contact the head in the event of belt failure. you would not need a head job as a result of a broken or skipped t-belt.the cam breaking off is usually and indication of over tightened t-belt. But immediatly following the installation of it extreme howling noise would have been heard for sometime before the cam would have broke.

the heads would need to be replaced due to the extreme down force on the front bearings which are part of the head machining. you will also see excessive up and down movement of the crankshaft and severly worn upper front main bearing. you would be better off with a complete long block to repair this incedent if in fact the crank has warn as metioned.
