Hey guys, my friend has a 240 with the SR20DET red top, and recently the valve train is starting to get a bit noisy. We thought maybe it doesnt like the 5w30 oil, and hes going to put in 10w30. I heard that theres a solenoid that is involved with the variable valve timing that may be bad and cause symptoms like this, think that may be it? Its not horrensdously loud like a diesel or anything, but if you listen for it its noticeable. Any input would be great

Red tops don't have variable cam timing.

It's probably air in the hydrolic lash adjusters

S13 SR's (redtops and blacktops) do not have VVT, only the S14 and S15 SR's (both had black valve covers) had it. Under the SR FAQ's sticky there is a link to the differences b/t the motors.

I haven't read the technical points of your head build thread in awhile. Did you get it re-shimmed?

I've often heard people confuse Injector Clicking with Valvetrain noise.

Put a screwdriver tip on the injectors and listen with your ear on the handle and see if its in rythym with the noise you hear.

Just a suggestion.

Just do lots of research and checking out things before you buy one. Plan out any build you might do, do lots of research, buy quality parts/stuff, etc.

That was my next guess. Unfortunately, I can't watch youtube, I'm at work and the filters pwn me.

SR and RB injectors are notoriously loud.
