The automatic transmission fluid acts as a corrosive agent in an engine, while still being a decent lubricant (stopping any serious harm to mechanical parts).
Why is this good you ask? Because it gets into tiny little places where oil someimes can't. In this case, the tiny oiling hole in the lifters. Hydraulic lifters work by pumping oil in and out, constantly keeping the valve height at the correct point. But if that oiling hole gets plugged with crap, the lifters dry up and make that tapping noise. By injesting the ATF, it eats through the junk stuck in the oiling hole and allows oil to once again flow into the lifter, lubricate it and therefore stop the ticking.
Just be warned, ATF can be very dangerous to put in an engine. Make sure you know what you're doing before you go ahead with this.
