When I have the windshield defroster on there is the normal noise coming from the front of the dashboard as air is directed to the windshield. As I change the airflow through the floor only, the noise continues. Minimal air comes out of the defroster but all of the noise is still there. If I go one setting to the left to chest and floor there is silence. Has anyone else noticed this? It is hard to imagine that Nissan would design it this way.

The sounds coming from the HVAC system will very depending on the setting you choose (and fan speed). This is normal and in my experience typical in most cars. Defrost and floor tend to make more noise with the front vents the quietest.

Our 2013 Rogue is kept in a garage that is slightly heated at 50 degrees. We keep cars heater settings on 75 with fan on auto. It's really quiet at any setting we put it on, although any grade you go up or pass a car the engine is so loud it drowns everything else out. Even the radio.
