NOISEY NEWLY OVERHAULED KA24E IN A 1993 PICKUP!

I just, an hour or so ago, finally finished up an overhaul on my 1993 Pup. With the hood still removed, and the truck under a low carport, the engine was run for less than two minutes. Started right up. From the start, it makes considerable noise from the rocker/cam area. But I may not know what to expect ... and it may be normal noise level ... but certainly louder than a Ford four banger that I overhauled a couple of months back.

I did the overhaul labour on the engine bottom, but had a specialty shop rebuild the head. Got rebuilt rockers, shafts, resurfaced valves, etc ... and a new set of lifters. I made no effort to pre-primed the lifters ... could this be the noise-maker?

I did pour oil over the cam, rockers and chain drive. I hand primed the oil pump and then cranked the engine without plugs 'til the oil-light went out. All this before starting up the engine.

When the engine was idling, I peeked inside the oil-fill hole. Seems to be plenty of oil splashing about. But tomorrow I may hand-crank the engine and see if oil is coming up to the cam/rocker area.

Any thoughts??

i dont have a KA-E and i cant be of much specific help, but before you poop your pants:

its not all that abnormal, especially after a rebuild. your lifters need to be bleed. there are a few threads about this, but neverlift definately knows how....

no! damn it not till I get my pics

yeah it sounds to be the lifters fvckin nissan, pull the valve cover off and see(with your finger) if they compress easily. IF yes,you can try and rev her at 1500 or so for a few minutes after shes warmed ALL the way. Also we have a write up on how to bleed them but htat involves removing them.

That is not what I do tho... My technique is that of a mad mans, I take that ***** to 7200rpm(under load),at wot no more then twice,if she's still bitchy,I let her sit for 30 minutes or so and repeat. I dont recommend this unless you got some balls to yah,I got high mileage and am awaitng a rebuild tho. I think it works so well due to the lifters not having as much chance to bleed air in intead of oil. My main bitchy lifter are on #2 evey time too. Gives me a real nasty backfire and the clack clack clack sound. I really dislike hydraulic lifters. solid conversions are out but limited IMHO as hybridka put them "on hold".

exactly just idle it up to 2-3k and all the air will be pushed out of the lifters and the noise will go away. I've rebuilt sooo many of those motors(nissan tech.) and its just one of those things, they don't have high oil pressure at idle like some other nissan engines.

Well, you guys were pretty much on target. I had a chance today to drive the old pup a few miles and it settled down nicely ... sounds about right now.

Thanks to all.

This was my first Nissan engine to work on ... so I'm a newbie! I would think of removing the head and giving it to a specialty shop such as "Dover Cyl Head service".

Dover did fantastic job for me ... and fixed things that I would not have known how to check. It seems Nissan valve rockers are a weak area ... perhaps do not get enough oil ... so to have this area checked by experts would be good.

At your mileage, you might want to replace the timing chain and gears(I'm assuming your model also uses a chain). Kits are avail.

I read about bleeding the lifters by taking apart the valvetrain and i got a question. If the lash cylinders are collapsed do you have to buy a whole new lifter or can you buy the cylinders alone? That would problably be a lot cheaper for me to do while working on my upcoming rebuild.

Also, how long do you guys usually keep the engine at 2700-3000 to bleed the lifters?

** Sorry about the slight thread-jack
