noises..

1996 240sx s14 ka. 2.4L 285,000km original motor.

Just wondering if anyone would have a guess at this noise i have... actually I have 2 noises...

I know I can't show you the noise... but I'll just try my best to describe it...

1. somewhere in the exhaust.... around 2800 rpm after the engine is hot. sounds like someone threw a penny in the muffler.... is this the cat converter? happens when I'm coasting in gear at around 2500 - 2900 rpm.

2. this noise is from the engine.. more pronounced when engine is cold i think because my muffler isn't blowing hot air. Its a ticking noise... when I drive off in gear. shifting through all gears, according to engine speed.... its going tick tick tick tick. thinking maybe needs valve adjustment. or timing chain guide??? I can't tell. the ticking gets faster as the engine speeds up... ONLY happens in gear.

the exhaust noise i get it too and i have a brand new cat literally got it 7 days ago stil makes the name and at about the same rpm, idk whyas for the ticking it could be the guides i know that tick but idk when they tick. You said it only does it in gear so you should try searching through the forums to see if it is in fact your guidesalso i just read you got a s14 idk they had a problem with the guides but if noone gets back to you on here then search, or search while you wait.
