Hey guys.... This has happened to me about 3x already. I would start the car in the morning.. and when I start to back out.. it would hear this noise that sounds like something is scraping from the back. I'm pretty sure it is not the brakes... the transmission maybe? It is not like something is breaking... it sounds like scraping.... Any ideas? Has anybody else experienced this? I don't remember it happening when the car has been taken for a drive... it seems to happen only when I first back up. The sound happens when the car is moving already.

sounds me like the rear brake pads are sticking a bit.

After sitting overnight, the discs often get a little glaze on them. Then when you first start driving that rubs a bit against the rear pads.

Also.. i've seen a lot of rear brake calipers freeze up in 240's. After a while, the seals and such get pretty worn out and they just don't release like they should.

I agree, sounds like a caliper that is hung up. Another possibility is if your pads have wear sensors on them, the pads could be worn down to where the sensor tab is now rubbing on the rotor.

Unfortunately this happens to me too! I haven't checked it out yet but I bet it is the calipers. Gosh, I just don't have the money to buy all new ones...

Thanks for the reply guys. I knew this was an issue somebody would know about. Now, I know we can "upgrade" our brakes. How much do the parts and labor cost?

The first thing I would do eb.. pickup a new set of rear brake pads at the parts store ($30 max)..

Pull the rear wheels off and take the calipers apart.. Inspect the current pads.. if they are getting low.. put the new ones on there. Either way though, go ahead and completely open and then completely close the calipers a couple times.. The rear calipers have a little key type setup.. use a needle-nose pliers and twist... completely open and then the other way... do this a couple times to free them up a bit.. you should notice that after doing it the first time, they should open up a bit more freely. The put the pads back in the calipers and put the calipers back on the discs.. wheels back on, and then test them out.

I'd be willing to bet this solves your issue and you won't need to spend anymore time or money!

Good luck. let us know if you get stuck.

I had the same problem and it got fixed! I am glad i am not the only one. Ok, The dude at the shop just took off the brakes and cleaned all of it even the little parts and it worked fine after that. Only cost me $200. He said it had dirt build ups inside the brakes and thats why they were squeaking when you were backing out.

yeah dude this happens to me too!! it sounds loud and its embarrasing if other people are around. i dont think its the brakes because mine are fairly new and it justt started doing it but only in reverse. if i switch it back to park or drive and try again that sometimes stops it. and it does it at the weirdest times too. mine always seems to do it when there some hot girls around!!! now i just sit in my car till they leave!!

i think some one had mentioned it was the transmission and they were going to look into it but have not seen anyone post any new info on this , sorry!

I have a real hard time thinking it could be an AUTOMATIC trans that would make noise only when backing, if it was auto trans making noise you would be experiancing many more problems then just noise. I am fairly certain it has got to be a brake pad/caliper/rotor related problem.

You could check to see if the edge of the rotor has a little ridge on it. This will cause a kinda grinding noise when backing up as well... especially if the car has sat for a bit. Usually it is some rust/corrosion in edge. The brake pad does not make contact with the entire rotor, so the rotor only wears where the pad hits... over time the area that does not get worn starts to rust. If you have that, you can take a wire brush and try to smooth out the edge some and see if that helps. Good luck..

Sorry just thought of this as well... do you set your e-brake at night? Might be as simple as the cable hangin up a bit... little lithium grease on the cable may be all it needs...
