A couple of months ago, my '93 240 started making a very bad noise. I'd already sunk a lot of money into it, so I bought another car as a beater in anticipation of working on the 240. However, I've got no real clue where to start.

The noise is like a clunking, but I can't really tell where it's coming from. It seems to be around the right side of the block, around the headers . . . but I'm not sure. It makes it sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. If you rev it up a lil (not a lot, I'm afraid something will come flying out), it does get a bit louder. The car idles perfectly.

I know this isn't a very good description, but any help would be appreciated. The motor came from a rear-wrecked '93 and had 70k miles on it. One thing I do know -- I miss my 240!

Clunking... or knocking?

I wouldn't say knocking, really . . if I had a long enough mic cord, I'd record the damn sound. It's not in the top, I know that much. I know this is frustrating as I'm not giving good info, I just don't know how to describe it adaquately.

All the time, even just sitting in neutral?

Yep. It is a lot worse when you put it in gear and roll, though. It is a five speed, by the way. The clutch and flywheel are new as well.

Did you put the flywheel on or someone else. Watch out. I heard a weird noise in my friends sr that we just got running too. We thought it was rod knock but it was intermitant, It ran perfectly. We told him not to drive it till we figured out that knocking noise. He couldn't resist temptation. One week later we get a phone call "car won't start". Cranking the engine we hear a terrible grinding noise. Thought the 3000 dollar engine was toast. Took off the inspection plate and we could spin the flywheel with one finger. Turns out that the flywheel was loose and eventually sheared the flywheel bolts. Bye -bye sr for now.

Someone else put it in. There was a problem with the fork that engaged the clutch, and they said they straightened it . . . could this be part of the problem? I put the first clutch in, and it wasn't that bad taking the transmission out (putting it in is another story . . . ). If this is a possibility, I'd be more than glad to drop the thing.
