I have a 2018 Rogue S, it has 52,000 miles on it. Lately I have been hearing an odd noise that sounds like it's in the dash somewhere. It's a howling type noise like a bad bearing or something rubbing where it should not be. It only happens with the AC on and I am stopped with the car in gear, like at a red light. Soon as I get moving again the noise is gone. It will also go away if I shift to neutral or park. I am looking for ideas on what it might be please. The AC works fine otherwise, it is ice cold with strong air flow. The car does not have the electronic climate control, just standard knobs you turn for the fan and temp settings.

Thanks for any help.

Jimmy

The blower is the only thing spinning inside the cabin with the A/C on, so changing the blower speed should tell you if that's responsible. If not, it has to be coming from the engine box. Since it will do it at a stop, have an assistant put the car in gear and go over the moving parts with a stethoscope. Not all bearings behave like wheel bearings. It's entirely possible for a compressor or tensioner bearing to make highly audible noises at low RPM's which rise in pitch and become less audible when the rotation speed increases.

Thanks for the info. All of the blower speeds seem to be working ok. I had an idea it might be something under the hood because the fan and AC work fine, it just has the strange noise. I will check out what I can in the next few days, but will probably just let the Nissan dealer take care of it. The car is still under CPO extended warranty. If they can find a covered problem then I have a $100.00 deductible. If they find something wrong that is not covered then I will pay them for their diag time and hopefully know what I am up against to fix it myself or just pay the dealer to fix it, depending on the price.

Thanks,

Jimmy

Today I finally had time to check out the noise. I am no Nissan Technician by any means but I could find nothing loose or wrong under the hood. What I did find was the pipe for the air intake down at the front of the engine leading back to the air cleaner box was loose. It had a good bit of movement to it and I remembered I had a similar noise back when I first bought the car almost 3 years ago. Back then I had removed the bolt that holds down the mounting flange of the air intake pipe the by the left fenderwell and put a rubber bushing under it to stop the noise. Today I removed that same bolt and found the old rubber bushing was pretty much worn out and squashed. I did not have another bushing like it on hand so I replaced the bad bushing with a new 5/8" rubber grommet under the flange. I tightened everything up, took a long test drive and have not heard the noise since. The grommet I used is about 5/16" thick and made a pretty good insulator.
