ok so today i bought a timing light cause my just purchased 240 idles kinda weird. i need a timing light anyways and figured i should check it. well i look down to see if i can get a glimpse at the notches of degrees on the pully and dont see any, so i crawl under in hopes to find them on the bottom...NONE!! i looked for ten min (a fair amount of time considering the size of the pully) and i found nothing. no notches to point out the timing at all! what the hell can i do?

is it a stock pulley? grab some break cleaner, start cleaning, the paint may have worn off, but the notches should still be there. if still nothing, then maybe get a different pulley or look for signs of something scraping on the pulley.

another alternative for setting timing is using consult or the PC-based conzult or w/e

Have you ran your finger around the edge to feel for them?

Unless your pulley is some kind of freak, every OE and aftermarket 240SX pulley has timing marks. There's no other easy way to set ignition timing.

Can you see the pin that you use to match the marks up to?

Anyway, Consult is a great diagnostic tool but probably, IMO, overkill just to set your timing. It's still a great buy and you can get it from a NICO brother...

It's basically a slightly stripped down version of what Nissan techs use for about $2000 less. Just check to make sure you have a grey Consult port under the dash on the driver side.

Well, if all else fails, I have an RVIT-2 hooked up that can tell you where your timing is. If your ever in South OC come on by and we will hook it up and see where its at.

im aware its overkill but it's a suggestion, buying a conzult would prolly run as much as taking the car to the dealer and having them set the timing for you.

like it was said above, for a pullley not to have any sort of timing marks is retarted... i'd try to find out the brand, if it is name brand, let us know so someone else doesnt screw pick one up

you can pick up an obx pulley for a decent price. unorthodox also makes em but they are a bit pricier. megan might also make them, i know they do for the SR, haven't looked for the KA

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe units like RVIT-2 & Consult/Conzult/whatever it's called all display ECU timing, which is not necessarily what base mechanical timing is set at, so those would not fix your problem.

Have you tried manually cranking the pulley w/ a rachet and looking at each section & cleaning it section by section while you can see it?

If it's aftermarket, have you tried checking every ridge instead of just the one furthest back?

I has to have one... otherwise, if you have a SOHC, I have an oem crank pulley you can buy .

Consult can't check valve timing, but it should work fine for ignition timing.

im aware it cant do valve timing, but it is used to set and check base timing. look in the fsm under timing.

im plannin on taking out my marbles anyways cause the timing chain guide has gone and just rattles around. then i was gunna take it in for a tune up, do you think they would take off all the gaskets that i would have newly put on for taking out the guide?

no reason a tune up should involve getting inside the engine.you basically replace major wear items: spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, filters, oil, coolant, drivetrain fluids, etc.

btw, why would you take a car in for a tune up if you can do a full timing chain job yourself?

OK SO i found the notches on my pully, however there arent 7 notches like my chilton says there are, the notches are located in the middle more toward the back, they look like the guy who installed it made them, and they dont line up with my timing, trust me i tried. im freaking pissed

How many are there? On the DE there is only 6 (at least in this picture)...

http://ka-t.org/basetiming.php

Did you try setting/checking your base timing via the above method?
