So about 2 years ago I got a "free" credit report because I was trying to get a loan for a twin turbo 300zx. Today I notice some weird charge to my checking account. I ran part of the info through google, and I get this.

http://www.creditsuit.org/blog....html

I went back a year and found an identical charge for this time last year. So far I've been scammed out of $151 and some change.

Fortunatly, my Visa check card has a 0% liability thing, which means I can get the current $79.95 charge taken off by disputing the charge.

Bad news is I'll probably have to get a different account, and last years charge is past the window of getting my money back.

So don't get a "free" credit report.

there are some free 30 day membership credit checks online, i did one about a year ago and have not gotten charged one cent. All i did was get the credit check printed it out, then called and canceled my membership. so it was free and they dont hassle you over the phone either, but there is a long intro before you can speak to one of their reps.

I thought the law said that you can request a free credit report form the "Credit report companies" every six months or one year and they have to give it to you. Maybe i'm misinformed.

I know you can get a credit report if you are denied credit. Whomever the bank used to check your credit (experian, trans union or whatever) you can go to them and get a free report within 30 or 60 days

They do have a bit of an effect, but if you use them in moderation, it won't be a problem. It's generally a good idea to check your credit reports at least twice a year. You definitely want to keep an eye out for anything blatantly wrong or hinting at identity theft.
