Hello folks

I'm making progress (slowly) on diagnosing the NO START condition on a '86 non-Turbo 5-spd 2+2 (idle for a number of years).

I have a good battery, strong cranking and plenty of fuel at the fuel pressure regulator but NO engine START.
I drained the gas tank and put fresh fuel in it.

I pulled the spark plugs, checked the gap (.43 gap) but the all the plugs were BLACK and dry. I cleaned them and put them back in.

I discovered that the FUEL PUMP runs when the ignition key is switched to ON and ACC position (instead on being energized only at START position)....So the engine is probably flooded with fuel even before I crank the engine. That would explain the BLACK spark plugs. Am I correct at my assumptions so far??

I'm assuming the previous owner wired the fuel pump somehow to run when the ignition key is turned....I looked under the rear carpet and pulled the fuel pump cover but all the wiring looks fine there. I'm looking for the FUEL PUMP relay - where is it located??

On a separate question - Can I run the main computer in DIAGNOSTICS mode if the car is not running??

It could be that some sensor or ignition component is not working or needs replacing....

If you have any suggestions or information that will be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Since NO ONE reading this forum seems to know (or care to answer) my question about the location of the Fuel Pump relay, it's no big deal - I found it by tracing the wires from the fuel pump backwards.

Anyway, for future reference to others with similar issue, the Fuel Pump relay on a '86 is located right behind the passenger door panel, behind the lower plastic panel (behind the pass. seat)....It's a BLUE relay with 4 connections.

Mine was grounded by the previous owner so the fuel pump was ON all the time with the key in the ignition. I could hear the pump running even when the engine was not running!!

So this issue is now fixed....on to the next problem to solve....

I'm sorry no one responded in the first 32 hours of your post

your carunless it's a rhd import isnt't a factory turbo, might not even be a factory manual trans, so diagnostics are a crapshoot without knowing more about your car, if this was an auto manual swap in addition to the turbo swap someone might have shorted the relay instead of correctlu wiring the neutral saftey relay into the clutch saftey switch, depending on the donor year of the eingien and ecu who knows what other wiring issues might have popped up

He did say "non-Turbo". ;)

And the people who generally KNOW AND ANSWER Z31 related questions don't frequent NICO. Just not a regular hangout. Actually, many times when the different forums are mentioned, it isn't even brought up in the list of the big 5.

Anyway....

If the fuel pump is running, then that should be the last issue to deal with. I'd worry more about why the car isn't starting with the fuel pump running rather than anything else at that point. Because once the car starts running, the fuel pump will be working full time anyway.
