Hey guys, I have a 1990 240sx with the SOHC motor and I ran into a little problem today; It won't start!! Anyways, here are the symptoms:

When I turn the key on it has just a little bit of juice, enough to make the clock come on but nothing else. When I hook up a battery charger the starter relay will click a little bit and then it will stop and the clock and everything shuts off until I let go of the key. The EGI PUMP relay clicks like crazy and then stops once it gets more juice into the system(through the battery charger, and nothing else will work. I need to roll the windows up and when I hit the buttons the motors make a quick click and then a groaning sound. Also, when I try to turn the car over, a small cloud of smoke comes out of the wire where the cable meets the battery. OK there are the symptoms, now let me tell you what was done to the car prior to this happening.

When I bought the car, it had really aloose battery terminal on the positive battery cable, so I cut it off and bought a new one to replace it. Well the one I bought was pretty small so I had to trim about 1/3 of the copper wires off so that it would fit into the new terminal that I bought. I think this has to do with the problem possibly but I am not sure.

I think that it is one of these two problems:

either the positive battery cable shorted out, or the EGI PUMP relay went out. Please help me, I need this thing back up and running TONIGHT! Also, if you could, let me know what the hell an EGI pump is. Thanks for all of the help in advance guys, and I am hoping you won't mind helping a NOOB out!:)

i had a similar problem, i know you solved yours, but mine was caused by a starter kill switch that i had wired in, a crimp connection had partially fallen apart, it did something very similar (maniac clicking) just for anyone who has the problem and finds this post
