No Spark after pulling plug wires at distributer

Hi Folks, I am a old school mechanic. Anyway to make a long story short my friends 1999 infinity qx4 was running really bad so after checking for water in the fuel with a glass jar and a transfer pump I put a new fuel filter on to no avail. So next I checked the dist cap for cracks and loosened all the wires from the cap and pulled them one by one to see if the engine would change, no change then walaa no spark at all from any of the wires. If I need a secret Santa mechanic it would be now. What the heck did I fry or any ideas from the wizards out there.
