i have a 97 maxima SE. am i am not getting power to my crank sensor (ref), according to the wiring diagram, the white wire comes straight from the ecm. Reading the code states that there could be an open/short circuit. any ideas where the open circuit could be??

Since you have a wiring diagram, then you can do resistance and continuity check. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS-REF) is located on the upper part of the oil pan, adjacent to the crankshaft pulley. Disconnect the electrical connector and check the resistance of the sensor - must be 470-570 ohms at 68F. Replace sensor if not in spec. Clean the connector pins/sockets as needed.

If sensor resistance is Ok, check the continuity of the WHITE wire - pin 1 of sensor connector to pin 44 of the ECM. Ensure the white wire is not shorted to ground. Check continuity of the BLACK wire - pin 2 to engine ground. The main engine harness ground points (2 ea) are are located on top of the engine, besides the intake plenum near cylinder #2. Make sure the ground points are secure and clean.
