no reverse or 5th gear

does anybody know exactly whats wrong with my transmission?

heres the story....

my bro in law was driving/racing the car and shifted from 2nd to 5th.......after that, there is no reverse, no 5th gear. i tried driving it and found out that 1st and 2nd is fine, but when driving, 3rd and 4th wont go into gear while rolling. it will go into 3rd and 4th fine if the car is at a stop, but i still have no 5th and reverse.......i would much rather rebuild this transmission, but dont have the time to take it out and disassemble it and order parts.....if someone can tell me exactly what i need, i will order the parts and when the parts are all here, i can remove and rebuild it......

better yet, if i can get hooked up with a low miles trans., that will be even better.....i just dont want to pay $500 for the trans. my trans. only had 70k on it.....thats why i would rather rebuild it then buy someones trans. that they claim to have 40k on it......

sounds like your synchros got messed up. i think it would be cheaper to just buy a used transmission

I had a similar problem with my transmission. I couldn't shift into any gear other than 5th and reverse. all i had to do was take it apart and move some rods around. So, my suggestion is that you spend the time and take it apart yourself. You can easily teach yourself a lot about these things.

dusty......so you didnt replace anything? hummm...i would buy another one, but i cant seem to find one for a decent price......everybody wants atleast $500 without shipping.....

A Wtb ad in sac or bay craigslist might do the trick. Alot of Altamont and Thunderhill guys are around, so im sure someone has to have a spare.

It sounds more like the countershaft bearing got fvcked. If you decide to rebuild it, you might only have to replace the bearings for the main shaft and counter shaft

just the counter shaft bearing would cause no reverse, no 5th, and hard to engage to 3rd and 4th when rolling or driving?

if thats the case, i'd rather rebuild it.......thanks for the info.....

rebuilding it will be at least $500....You need a press if you don't have one, it takes about 1000lbs of force to get one of those gears off the shaft.You need to keep the gears with the same counter shaft so you need all new gears all new parts...there is a reason most shops don't rebuild trannys, unless you know what your doing and have equipment its probably better to buy a replacement.

I guess you may as well take it apart and check it out though...
