my buddy hooked a trans mission preassure gauge to my trans mission and found that the revers has no preasure. the fluid that came out of the reverse plug looked pretty bad. my boss says hell put in a new transmission but id rather fix this one and save some money.

When you say no pressure do you mean zero PSI?

Is that the only gear with an issue? The reverse drum/clutch pack is the first thing you remove after the front pump. Should be fairly straight forward, assuming you have the necessary tools, to pull the reverse drum and check the reverse piston seals. It's likely you have a leaking seal there. The question would be why did it go bad if that's the problem.

Or you can forget all that, and find a good used transmission at a salvage yard. Done!

I just wanted to note that I'm the one that did the pressure test on the reverse line port. There was no pressure at all. The needle didn't even twitch when moving to reverse. I had him raise the rpms a bit but that didn't do any good. I had the car completely off the ground on stands and noticed that when he raised the rpms, that rear wheels appeared to try and rotate forward. All forward gears work just fine. He said that at first when the car was first started for the day, when going from reverse to drive it would take a moment for it to respond. Once it warmed up it was fine. He said that this later went away and there were no more instances like that for a while and then one day after the car was warmed up, he was coming back from the store and when putting it into reverse, it took a minute to respond. So this time it was the reverse acting up but only when hot. This lasted about 2 weeks until he had no reverse.

No mention of level nor condition of fluid. Fundamentals can tell us a lot.

Fluid condition would be good to know, but his problem is certainly a mechanical internal problem. There is either a problem in the valve body or the reverse clutch pack and/or piston seals. Clutch material in the fluid might provide a clue to the root of the problem. But, at this point, he needs a new transmission or internal repair. Either way condition doesn't really matter at this point.

One other thing, make sure that when you shift the gear selector to 1st or 2nd gear ranges you still have normal operation. The low and reverse clutch applies along with the reverse clutch pack to engage reverse. This clutch also operates in those two low gear ranges when directly selected.

1st and 2nd gear engage when selected directly with no problem. Just reverse is inoperative. The fluid level is at the full hot mark.
