I have a 1991 Maxima with the VG30 that I bought for $35 b/c it needed a transmission. After installing the transmission, I found that the starter was rigged by having an electrical cord connected to it so that currents can flow and the car can crank. I removed the cord and let my car sit for a month. When I tried to start the car, it would not crank. When I tried to run and on-board diagnostic, the ECU would not light up. I ran a wire to the distributor to the battery and the car cranked. What is going on here?

If the ECU isn't on I'd first check fuses and and possibly relays if the fuses are good. If that's no go then I'd check the power wires then the connectors in the wire harness. Other than that I'm not sure what else to check without seeing what was modified. Good luck though!
